Jayden Danns scored his first goal since recovering from a long-term back injury as the Liverpool U21s continued pre-season with a 3-1 win over RC Lens.Danns had not featured at any level since starting in the 3-2 loss at PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League in January, owing to a niggling back injury. The 19-year-old did join Sunderland on loan only to spend the entire half-season deal back at the AXA Training Centre undergoing treatment. And while This Is Anfield understands there were plans to involve Danns on the pre-season tour of Hong Kong and Japan, the decision was later made for him to focus on his fitness while working with the U21s.That saw the teenager travel to Avion, France for a friendly against RC Lens on Tuesday, scoring in a 3-1 victory for Rob Page’s side.Keyrol Figueroa and Kaide Gordon got the other goals as Liverpool’s academy side continued a productive warmup schedule. That began with an 8-0 thrashing of Celtic U21s before a 1-1 draw with Wigan’s senior side, with Page – whose most recent job prior to joining the club was manager of the Wales national team – explaining the importance of the latter.“I was really pleased because it was more about physicality, it was more about you are playing against men now who are training week in, week out in a domestic league,” Page told the club’s official website.“I was so proud of the players against Wigan because I told them in the changing room they not only matched it but added some as well.“I thought we played some good football and I thought we were really aggressive in the press, which forced them into errors. It has given them confidence.”With Liverpool U21s again competing against senior sides from League One and League Two in the EFL Trophy – this season branded as the Vertu Trophy – Page saw that draw with Wigan as ideal preparation.“When we go into these EFL Trophy games this season against senior opposition, there is nothing for them to fear,” he continued.“We respect the opposition, like I’ve always said, but we won’t fear them.”There are likely to be many changes to Page’s ranks between now and the start of the season, with Danns among those who could depart on loan if he isn’t retained as part of the first-team squad.Sunderland had been credited with an interest in renewing their terms for the campaign but a move now seems improbable as they turn their focus to Chelsea‘s Marc Guiu.
