If the new Galaxy Watch 8, Watch 8 Classic, or Watch Ultra (2025) is your first Samsung smartwatch, you may have noticed that your new wearable doesn't have a screen lock security layer. You might be using a fingerprint, PIN, password, or pattern-based screen lock option on your Galaxy phone, but your new Galaxy Watch doesn't come with any of those features. Well, not by default, but you can indeed set a screen lock for your Galaxy Watch if you want that extra peace of mind. You won't have a fingerprint option, of course, because the Galaxy Watch doesn't have a fingerprint reader. But you can set a PIN or pattern-based screen lock on your new wearable. Even so, it works a little differently than it does on your phone. Here's all you need to know.Set up a screen lock option for your Galaxy WatchThe clever thing about the Galaxy Watch screen lock security layer is that, once you set it up, it only activates after you remove the smartwatch from your wrist. As long as you're wearing the Galaxy Watch, it will remain unlocked until it no longer detects your wrist. Thanks to this clever feature, you won't have to unlock your Galaxy Watch every time you want to peek at the watch face or access your Tiles. At the same time, you can rest easy knowing that if you misplace your Galaxy Watch, nobody will be able to access your data without entering your PIN or pattern first. To set up a screen lock on your Galaxy Watch:Open the Settings app on your Galaxy Watch.Navigate to and access Security and privacy.Select Lock type.Choose the pattern and PIN-based screen lock option.Follow the on-screen prompts to set up your PIN or pattern. On a final note, this feature exists for older Galaxy Watches too — those that don't yet run One UI 8 Watch but will receive the upgrade soon. The setup process is the same on the latest Galaxy Watch 8 series and older Samsung smartwatches (Galaxy Watch 4 and up) running the latest available firmware version. But if you want to upgrade to the latest Galaxy Watch 8 series, you can.
