The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government will take steps to reopen the defunct Comtrust Weaving Factory in Kozhikode city, P. Gavas, the newly elected district secretary of the Communist Party of India (CPI), has said.Attending a ‘Meet-the-press’ at the Calicut Press Club here on Monday (July 28), he said that though the State government had passed a Bill in the Assembly to acquire the century-old factory in 2012, and it was approved by the President in 2018, some court cases were preventing the authorities from going ahead. The factory had been closed down in 2009. Mr. Gavas said that the State secretaries of the CPI and the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the Industries Minister, and other officials had communicated with each other to explore various options. He also said that the government should also take over the hundreds of acres of land owned by the defunct Grasim Industries at Mavoor.Mr. Gavas was elected as the district secretary at a recently held district conference of the CPI. He said that the CPI would make all efforts to improve the LDF’s performance in the upcoming local body elections. Steps would also be taken to ensure that the LDF government got a third term in power, he added. Calicut Press Club president E.P. Mohammed and secretary P.K.
