Woman held for stealing 39 sovereigns worth of gold jewellery in Tirupattur

A 52-year-old woman was arrested by the Vaniyambadi Taluk police in Tirupattur on Thursday (July 31, 2025) on charges of stealing gold jewellery weighing 39 sovereigns from the house of an advocate at Devasthanam village near Vaniyambadi town.The police said the arrested person was identified as B. Latha, a native of Devasthanam village. She had been working as a domestic worker in the house for the past few years.Initial inquiry revealed that V. Shanmuga Ganesan (75), a prominent advocate, was living with his family, including children, in the village. He and his family members used to store a portion of gold jewellery in the puja room of the house.Mr. Ganesan was planning to attend a function in the area, and when he searched for a few gold jewellery pieces to wear for the event, he found 39 sovereigns of gold jewellery and a few silver articles missing from the puja room.Based on a complaint, the Vaniyambadi Taluk police investigated the case. During the inquiry, police found that strangers had not come into the house for the past few weeks. They interrogated Latha, who told the police that she took several pieces of jewellery in small quantities every time she left the house after work to evade suspicion from the houseowners.The police recovered 16.5 sovereigns of stolen jewellery from her. A case was registered, and she was lodged at the sub-jail in Tirupattur town. A probe is under way.Published - August 01, 2025 11:58 am IST
