PN leader candidate Alex Borg has issued a number of long-term proposals aimed at making home ownership more affordable and accessible.“Everyone has a right to own a decent accommodation that they can call their own home,” Borg said.“Becoming a homeowner shouldn’t be a burden or obstacle to your own personal progress. We must also promote social justice to help those people who can never purchase a home without help, no matter how hard they work.” View this post on InstagramA post shared by Lovin Malta (@lovinmalta)Some of Borg’s proposals have already been implemented to some extent but the PN leader stressed that they should be viewed as part of a long-term strategy to make home ownership affordable, rather than one-off measures.Borg proposed the expansion of rent-to-own deals, whereby rent payments are put aside towards the eventual down payment of the property. He also called for a vaster model of equity sharing, whereby the government co-invests in the purchase of a property, with the individual able to buy these shares out over time.Other proposals include subsidised home loans, grants and loans for first-time buyers at preferential rates, and more incentives for people to purchase and restore vacant properties.“We must ensure that we live in a fairer society and that economic progress doesn’t act as a hindrance to people who are still starting out,” Borg said.Do you agree with these proposals?•
