Doja Cat has jumped right into the Sydney Sweeney, American Eagle ad backlash, and her new TikTok video is now going viral for all the reasons you’d expect. Last week, the Pennsylvania-based denim brand dropped a new campaign starring the Euphoria actor, where she plays around with the words “jeans” and “genes.” In the ad, Sweeney says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring… My jeans are blue,” as the visuals zoom in on her blonde hair and blue eyes. But despite the glossy production and how well it fits both Sweeney’s image and the brand’s vibe, the internet didn’t take it lightly. Many slammed it as a “racial dog whistle.”Also read: Sydney Sweeney’s new ‘great genes’ ad campaign gets criticised for being insensitive and in poor taste. WatchDoja Cat mocks Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle adOn July 29, Doja Cat posted a video mocking Sydney’s exact script, but using an exaggerated Southern accent. She delivered the now infamous line, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour. My jeans are blue,” sounding sarcastic while sneering. The rapper didn’t change the script, just delivered it like a parody. Sweeney’s ad has been under fire since day one, with critics saying it gives off “Nazi propaganda” energy. Some even compared it to something pulled out of 1930s Germany. Shields was 15 back then, and the brand was hit with backlash for sexualising minors. “When those traits are consistently uplifted as genetic excellence, we know where this leads,” one person commented online. Another added, “This echoes the pseudoscientific language of racial superiority. These traits have always been used to prop up a racial hierarchy.”Also read: Elisabeth Olsen has to choose between Miles Teller and Callum Turner in Eternity, watch trailerAs of yet, American Eagle hasn’t said anything officially, and neither has Sweeney. But because of the backlash, AE quietly removed the “great genes” line from the newer versions of the ad. The brand, however, said they’re still running the campaign and trying to create a positive impact from it by donating all proceeds from the “Sydney Jean” to Crisis Text Line, a mental health nonprofit. This isn’t the first time Sydney Sweeney has been called out over her association with a brand or an ad. Back in June, she faced flak for a soap collab with Dr. Squatch. The soap bar claimed to include water from her actual bath. Critics called it anti-feminist and weird. On the work front, Doja Cat is prepping for the release of her new album, Vie. It’s her first since 2023’s Scarlet. According to the rapper, it’s a pop-heavy record, and the production of the same is almost complete. In fact, the TikTok she posted could also be a way of keeping the buzz going as she heads into promo mode.
