West Berbice driver remanded for armed robbery

A 31-year-old driver has been remanded to prison after facing charges of armed robbery.On Thursday, Patrick Roach, hailing from Number 28 Village, West Coast Berbice, appeared at the Fort Wellington Magistrates Court where he presented his case before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy.The court heard that on July 28th, Roach committed an armed robbery against Balwant Changalal, 35, from Experiment Bath Settlement, stealing a gold chain valued at $400,000.Roach did not enter a plea for the charge.The prosecution opposed bail, citing Roach’s pending case at Blairmont Magistrates Court for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.Magistrate Hardy upheld the prosecution’s concerns, denying bail and remanding Roach to prison. He is set to return to court on August 20th.Reports indicate that around 9:00 PM, Roach, along with associates, was at a shop in Middle Dam Bush Lot. It was at that time that he approached Changalal, forcibly yanking off the victim’s gold chain and striking him in the face.Following the attack, Changalal quickly escaped in a nearby vehicle.
