The role of parents’ presence, patterns of behaviour becomes an important factor in their development.Suniel Shetty recently spoke about how his rock solid relationship with his wife has played a significant role in his kids’ upbringing. “Ye sachchai hai, you will only realise this later, what a good wife does, what kind of a balance she brings in your life and your kids’ life. In their upbringing. And that is reflected in your child’s values and personality. Jab bahar ke log aake aapke bachchon ke baare mein kuch kehte ya unke baare mein koi perception form karte hai, it has a lot to do with what the wife has to contribute,” he said.According to Rima Bhandekar, Senior Psychologist at Helpline, Mpower, Aditya Birla Education Trust, when children observe their parents come to terms with their differences with respect, care for each other, and treat their life’s stress in healthy ways, children grow up knowing how to stay calm, think clearly, and bounce back stronger. Thus, choosing a healthy partner becomes key.Bhandekar shared some key traits one should look out for when choosing a partner:1. Emotional Acumen: Can they stay calm during stress and conflicts? Do they recognize underlying feelings beyond what is said — of their own, the child’s, and others? While that initial infatuation or “spark” can be captivating, what truly helps a relationship sustain over time is emotional maturity and emotional compatibility. It is easier to give in to the chemistry which could come in the form of physical attraction and much more difficult to gauge someone’s emotional capabilities.2. Compassion: Can they respond with compassion, even when the behavior is tough? It’s not about counting past partners or passing judgment, but rather understanding how they’ve handled previous relationships. Do they take responsibility for their part, or do they label every ex as “crazy”? Patterns in their past can be quite telling. It also gives you an understanding of their attachment styles and their love language. Suniel Shetty with son and son-in law (Source: Instagram/@sunielshetty)3. Evenness: Are their actions reliable? Can the child trust them? 4. Respectful Interaction: Can they express their mind without shouting or shutting down? Do they listen when others talk? 5. Shared Ideals: Are both adults on the same page on values like parental control, schooling, love, and domestic aspirations? Raising kids is hard work — but a respectful, loving partner makes all the difference.Story continues below this adValues, not just hobbies“We often focus on shared interests that are great, but it’s the shared values that really matter. While sharing the same interests and hobbies eases building the initial phases of the relationship, what helps a relationship sustain is the ability to have shared values about the way of being,” said Bhandekar.Their relationship with themselvesAccording to her, having a relationship with yourself doesn’t just involve going for spas, getting your nails done or taking a trip; although this is all an important part of taking care of yourself. What needs your attention is how to talk to yourself and how aware you are about your physical and emotional needs.ALSO READ | ‘Everybody wants the comfort of having a caesarean baby’: Suniel Shetty slammed for praising Athiya Shetty’s natural delivery; gynaecologist explains no such thing as ‘easy birth’Your nervous system around them“This might sound a bit unusual, but notice how your body reacts when you’re with them. Do you feel safe, calm, and understood, or are you constantly on edge, seeking validation or fearing misunderstanding?” she said, adding that our nervous system often picks up on things our minds try to rationalize away. For more lifestyle news, click here to join our WhatsApp Channel and also follow us on Instagram© IE Online Media Services Pvt LtdTags:partnerSuniel Shetty
