But in doing so, it turns out they entered a cul-de-sac.Ruben Amorim’s side just cannot seem to string a consistent run of positive performances or results together. A 1-1 draw with last-placed Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday was a bitterly disappointing way to end 2025.United must be kicking themselves. Over the last couple of months, they have taken three points from a possible 12 in home matches against Everton, West Ham United, Bournemouth and Wolves.Had they won three of those games, United would be fourth right now and only three points behind third-placed Aston Villa. As it is, they find themselves down in sixth going into the weekend. With the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur all dealing with their own issues, United are still in the race for Champions League qualification.Amorim would no doubt point out – with some justification – that he has been without some key players of late, including Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes and Matthijs de Ligt. But 14 months into his tenure, Amorim has yet to persuade United fans that he is the right man to take the club forward. A recent willingness to be more tactically flexible was abandoned for the Wolves game, when United reverted to a 3-4-3 system that patently does not suit the squad at the manager’s disposal.Predictably, United proceeded to deliver a below-par performance against one of the worst Premier League teams we have seen over the last few seasons. This can still be a successful campaign for United. Despite their general struggles in the post-Alex Ferguson era, the Red Devils have continued to win trophies. The FA Cup is a competition they should target. Pair that with a top-four finish, and you are looking at a pretty good season. Right now, though, it is hard to see United achieving either of those feats. This will not be an easy game for the visitors to Elland Road. Leeds United have been terrific since the start of last month. Thursday’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool at Anfield was just the latest in a string of impressive results.Leeds, who are now seven points clear of the drop zone, will see this is an eminently winnable encounter.Leeds United vs Manchester United betting tipsLeeds United and Manchester United are ready to lock horns at Elland Road this weekend.More woe for Manchester UnitedExpect a ferocious atmosphere at Elland Road, where the home crowd will urge Leeds United to fly into tackles and get the ball forward quickly.Manchester United should play the game, not the occasion. They have better footballers in their ranks than Leeds and should focus on getting the ball down and playing. That is easier said than done, however. Leeds have the bit between their teeth right now, and their energy and physicality could overwhelm Amorim’s charges.United are a much poorer side without Fernandes, not to mention Amad and Mbeumo. Follow the form book in Sunday’s early kick-off by backing the hosts to add another three points to their tally. Go for a Leeds United win at 5/3 with 247Bet Leeds to go aheadThe first goal in this game will be crucial. If Manchester United get it, they would take the sting out of the atmosphere and put themselves in an excellent position to emerge victorious. If Leeds United break the deadlock, on the other hand, they would put another dent in the opposition’s fragile confidence.Leeds have hit the front in four of their last five home games, while Manchester United have gone behind in three of their last four matches at opposition grounds. The Whites will fancy their chances of drawing first blood in this one. Back Leeds United to score first at 27/25 with BetMGM Calvert-Lewin to pounceDaniel Farke shuffled his pack for the trip to Liverpool on New Year’s Day. It was a risky decision which paid off when Leeds United held the Reds to a goalless draw.Dominic Calvert-Lewin was one of those left out of the starting XI at Anfield, much to the surprise of the visiting fans.Calvert-Lewin has been in sensational form, scoring seven goals in his previous six outings. The former Everton frontman will be back in the line-up on Sunday and he will cause Manchester United plenty of problems. There is a good chance Calvert-Lewin’s purple patch will continue on the first weekend of the new year. Tip Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score at 13/8 with bet365 Leeds United vs Manchester United predicted lineupsLeeds United expected lineup: Perri; Bornauw, Bijol, Struijk; Bogle, Tanaka, Ampadu, Stach, Gudmundsson; Calvert-Lewin, Okafor.Manchester United expected lineup: Lammens; Dalot, Heaven, Martinez, Shaw; Ugarte, Casemiro; Zirkzee, Cunha, Dorgu; Sesko.
