We rescued a reactive male Mastiff (Dogo Argentino) several years ago. He also had some trauma, PTSD, and severe separation anxiety so I know exactly how ridiculous this ask is. Firstly, I would have never entrusted my baby to a complete stranger. You don't know if they have the experience, the confidence, the stamina ,and mental/emotional strength required for this kind of dog. And to only pay $50 per day? Absolutely absurd. Secondly, the person they potentially hire does not know and understand this specific dog. One must know that dog's triggers and when he/she is approaching their threshold and how to divert. This takes an incredible amount of training of both the dog and its people. Pushing a dog like this into a stranger's home will only cause the dog more anxiety which in turn can make the dog even more reactive. He requires a lot of exercise A walk around the block every couple of hours doesn't cut it with these breeds. When mine was younger, we had to run a minimum of several miles per day. When my Dogo didn't get enough exercise, he became destructive. This is also not a dog you can just leash up & take for a walk. One must be aware of their surroundings at all times. The biggest issue when walking a reactive dog usually isn't that particular dog at all but other dogs and their owners. A lot of people do not follow leash laws. How will this stranger handle potentially being charged by an off leash animal? The sitter probably also doesn't understand the strength, speed, agility, and athleticism of these breeds. I used to liken my boy to those old episodes of Cops where it takes 12 officers to subdue to one guy hopped up on angel dust. This is completely irresponsible on the part of the pet parent and sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen. Having a reactive dog is an incredibly hard, incredibly isolating experience that requires a lot of time, training, patience, money, and personal sacrifice. If we couldn't bring our boy on a trip with us, one of us had to stay home with the dog. This person clearly does not have what it takes to raise a dog like this and it sounds like they have already given up on him. My heart breaks for this poor animal.
