Nnamdi Asomugha has taken his all-action style from the NFL to the big screen. The 44-year-old’s stage was once the football field, but he has swapped disrupting receivers for Hollywood elitists.Asomugha always earned a million bucks, but now regularly looks it as wellGettyAsomugha already had a career that fans would have dreamed of after being drafted in the first round by the Oakland Raiders in 2003.The four-time All-Pro cornerback earned $71million in his ten-year career with the Raiders, Eagles and 49ers.In omens of what his post-football career was to become, Asomugha had a penchant for watching himself during his NFL tenure. But not in a Hollywood kind of way – instead, he’d study game footage to help fuel his bid to become a star shutdown cornerback. In contrast to Dwayne Johnson and Terry Crews, who swapped football for action roles, Asomugha has a more unique story.“I know my limitations, Asomugha told the Guardian last year. “I admire people like The Rock who have done a tremendous job of coming into the business with a name and becoming very successful.“But I just knew it wasn’t my personality. I wanted to be more than a celebrity trying acting. “I didn’t want to rely on my past life in order to succeed. It was more about learning and seeing if I could exist. “Then I would feel like I earned it.”Asomugha has taken parts of his NFL career into his directing, producing, and actingGettyThe Cornerback played 11 seasons with the Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, and San Francisco 49ersGettyAsomugha was once on track to be a superstar before his NFL career was curtailed after he signed an infamous $60 million contract with the Eagles before the 2011 season. After hanging up his helmet, the American tried an internship at a private equity firm and tried his hand at broadcasting.“But nothing was moving me,” Asomugha added. “I remember someone asking me, ‘What is it that you like? What do you love?’“It just got me on the track of, ‘Well, I can try acting.’ I knew it was crazy and against the odds.”Asomugha’s links to the acting world are obvious, having married Emmy-award winner Kerry Washington months before he retired. He has two children with Scandal star Kerry WashingtonGettyBut Asomugha is now a film and stage star in his own rightGettyBut as was the case in not relying on anything but himself, Asomugha became a rookie for the second time in his life as a wannabe actor. After initially struggling to land roles, the 6 ft 2 in star instead created his own work and now runs a production company, Iam21.Asomugha wrote and starred in his directorial debut, The Knife, which opened to impressive reviews at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival. He has also been an executive producer on Harriet and Nanny, an actor on Crown Heights and Sylvie’s Love, and produced The Banker.“I found many ways to convert the skills I used in my football position into acting and directing,” Asomugha finished.“It’s crazy. I never would have thought they’d intertwine so much.”Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our NFL Facebook page, subscribe to our talkSPORT End Zone YouTube channel for all the offseason news, interviews and more
