The Road Transport Ministry is proposing a sharp increase in penalties for traffic violations committed by drivers with children on board. A new merit-demerit points system could also soon be in place for all drivers, linking rule compliance to licence validity and insurance costs. These amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act are currently under inter-ministerial review. The goal is to push for safer, more accountable driving. Experts, however, have raised concerns over the real-world feasibility and fairness of implementation.
