‘Dude’s crazy’ – Giants training camp brawl was likened to ‘alligators and lions’ going at it in cafeteria

Wait 5 sec.

Training camp and brawls go hand in hand, like peanut butter and jelly. The summers are hot and tempers are at an all-time high. Players are tired and grumpy. It’s easy to set someone off.Jeremy Shockey was as tough as they comeGettyOne of the most infamous brawls of all-time took place back in 2002, inside the cafeteria of the New York Giants facility.Insert rookie tight end Jeremy Shockey and fellow teammate, linebacker Brandon Short. The story goes that the Giants rookies were set to perform for the veterans at dinner, as was tradition. Singing, dancing, whatever the case was, it was harmless, but Shockey wasn’t having it.The first round draft pick of the Giants that year had just arrived after a five-day holdout and clearly wasn’t in the mood to put on a show. However, Michael Strahan and Short both called out the tight end to perform next. They didn’t care about his draft status.“KC, looks like you have a rook over there with you,” Strahan said to quarterback Kerry Collins.“Rook,” Short added, “you heard the man. Get up and sing.”Shockey declined Short’s request. The linebacker couldn’t believe what he heard. Short said clearly: “Did you hear the man? You have to get up and sing a song.”Again, Shockey refused: “I’ll sing it later.”Shockey played for the Giants from 2002-2007GettyShort was not the man to test, especially as a rookieGettyAt that point, Short had had enough. He got up and took a step towards Shockey, while teammates around him had to grab him.“Get up and sing a song,” Short demanded, no longer asking the first round pick. Finally Shockey obliged.“What do you want me to do, B-Short?”“Name, school, signing bonus, and sing a song. What’s your name?”“Jeremy Shockey.”“School?”Shockey reportedly mumbled, “Miami,” and “$3.3million.” Short pressed the young player to say it louder, to which Shockey replied; “This one is for you, B-Short.” That is when the veteran linebacker snapped and attacked Shockey. The two teammates exchanged punches that led to an all-out brawl across the cafeteria floor.Players jumped in, as well as head coach Jim Fassel, to try and break it up, but the two had already done enough damage at that point. After the fight, Short describes it as “alligators” and “lions” rolling around. Shockey had a simple answer as to why Short attacked him.“I was beating the s— out of him all minicamp,” Shockey said.“This dude’s crazy,” Short recalled.Teammate Tiki Barber said that after that moment, no one messed with the tight end. “After that, nobody f—-d with Shockey. At all,” Barber recalled.NFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare?Shockey played 10 seasons in the NFL, including his first six with the Giants. In his rookie year, he was named First-Team All-Pro.
