Patrick Mahomes has big plans for $450m salary with unprecedented Chiefs venture like that of Tom Brady

Patrick Mahomes has made his intentions clear on what he wants to do in his future. The Kansas City Chiefs franchise quarterback has already led his team to five Super Bowl appearances in the last six seasons, winning three rings. Mahomes has a goal of owning a minority stake in the ChiefsGettyA generational talent, Mahomes’ name is already firmly in the conversation for being one of the greatest NFL quarterbacks of all time, despite still only being in his prime at 29-years-old. At the moment, it is hard to envision that a time will come when there will be no Mahomes under center for the Chiefs, but with the two-time league MVP having signed a lucrative 10-year, $450 million contract extension in 2020, he isn’t going anywhere until at least 2031.This time also coincides with that of the proposed relocation from the iconic Arrowhead Stadium in Missouri, and across state lines to a brand new state-of-the-art dome worth $3 billion in Kansas City. This is something Mahomes has publicly voiced his views on, saying that it doesn’t matter where they play, because they know that the Chiefs Kingdom faithful will be with them no matter what.Mahomes has spent his entire eight-year NFL career so far in Kansas City, and has taken them out of the depths of mediocrity and turned the Chiefs into serial Super Bowl winners, ending their 50-year drought for SB glory in 2019. With the Chiefs ingrained inside of him, perhaps an ownership stake of the team lies in his future. According to a sit-down chat with CNBC’s Alex Sherman, Mahomes has exactly that on his radar.“Hopefully it’s a long time from now, when I retire, but that would obviously be cool,” Mahomes said.“Kansas City and the Chiefs have done so much for me, so to be a part of them in any way would be really cool.“I know they do the minority stakes and stuff like that now. I don’t think the Chiefs have done that yet, so maybe down the line, but that’ll be about 10-15 years from now and so hopefully they’ll hold a space for me.”Mahomes has opened up about wanting to have a minority stake in the Chiefs once he retiresGettyClark Hunt and his family currently hold full ownership of the ChiefsGettyMahomes is already a minority investor in other sports teams in Kansas City, including the MLB team the Kansas City Royals, as well as the NWSL soccer team, the Kansas City Current, alongside his wife Brittany, and the MLS team Sporting Kansas City. The three-time All-Pro quarterback even has a stake in Formula 1 team Alpine. When asked why he has invested so much money into sports, the answer to Mahomes was a simple one.“I love sports,” Mahomes said. “I love what sports not only do, but obviously the product that they put out there in the games, but how they can change people’s lives.“People that are on the field or court, or whatever that is, or people that are watching. Sports bring people together. “If it’s a family like at Arrowhead, and some of these other teams that I have invested in, these families come together to watch a game and just enjoy the time together.”Mahomes already has investments in other Kansas City sports, including the RoyalsGettyNFL legend Tom Brady is also a minority team owner of the Las Vegas RaidersGettyMahomes wouldn’t be the first NFL player to hold a minority ownership in an NFL team, should the Hunt family – who currently hold full ownership of the Chiefs – decide to open up to minority stakeholders. Of course, it was announced in 2024 that seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady had invested in the Las Vegas Raiders. Since doing so, he has already been integral to the team this off-season, having helped them re-sign star defensive end Maxx Crosby, lure in quarterback Geno Smith, and draft elite running back prospect Ashton Jeanty who could change the Raiders culture. There are also other instances whereby athletes have invested in sports, such as NHL legend Mario Lemieux — one of the richest NHL stars ever — who purchased the Pittsburgh Penguins in their time of need, before selling the majority of the team later down the line.NBA star LeBron James holds stakes in entirely different sports, including the Penguins, Boston Red Sox and soccer team, Liverpool FC, whilst tennis superstar Serena Williams holds minority stakes in the Miami Dolphins, and NWSL team, Angel City.  “I think sports are something in this world that are not divisive as far as everybody wants their team to win,” Mahomes added.“I’ve invested in all the sports in Kansas City because Kansas City has been great to me, so it’s really cool to go and watch these games and have a rooting interest more than just a fan, but someone that is invested in the team and it has made watching the games even more fun.”Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our NFL Facebook page, subscribe to our talkSPORT End Zone YouTube channel for all the offseason news, interviews and more.
