After five months, a refurbishment project in the Italy World Showcase Pavilion at EPCOT is finally complete. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Zapa na Disney (@zapanadisney)In February, work quietly began on the large tower in the Italy EPCOT World Showcase Pavilion. Temporary construction walls blocked the base of the tower, and scaffolding covered in a camouflaged scrim surrounded the entire structure, creating a faux brick appearance for guests while crews refurbished the actual brickwork. As of mid-July, crews had removed much of the scaffolding and scrim from the upper parts of the tower. Crews appeared to have made no significant changes to the brickwork or the stone carvings; the refurbishment was limited to routine maintenance and repainting. At that time, construction walls and camouflage scrim still surrounded the tower’s base.Credit: Disney WeddingsNow, according to WDWNT, all signs of construction have disappeared from the Italy World Showcase Pavilion at EPCOT. Walls and scrim have disappeared from the tower’s base, and guests can once again walk up to the structure. Even though the building has a door, it has never been accessible to Walt Disney World Resort guests (that hasn’t changed).Like other EPCOT World Showcase areas, the Italy Pavilion has structures modeled after different real locations in Europe. The refurbished tower is a replica of St. Mark’s Campanile, the bell tower at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Italy. Of course, the Walt Disney World Resort version is scaled down; the real building is over 300 feet tall, while EPCOT’s bell tower is just over 80 feet tall.Credit: Jess Colopy, Inside the MagicWalt Disney World Resort hasn’t issued a public statement about this refurbishment project at EPCOT, which isn’t unusual. Disney parks rarely comment on maintenance projects unless they significantly impact the guest experience, like temporary ride closures or construction projects that could disturb Disney Resort hotel guests.Did you visit EPCOT during the Italy World Showcase Pavilion construction?
