The woman has been booked on charges of furnishing false information and fabricating evidence. The police said because this is a non-cognizable offence, she has been served a notice and has been directed to appear before the investigation officer for inquiry.According to the police, a probe had revealed that the man was a 25-year-old man she knew, that there was no forced entry into the apartment, and that no substance had been sprayed on her, as she had claimed.“We have registered a non-cognizable offence against the woman for giving false information and fabricating evidence. She has been booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 212 (furnishing false information), 217 (false information, with intent to cause public servant to use his lawful power to injury of another person) and 228 (fabricating false evidence). She has been served a notice,” a senior police officer said.In her First Information Report (FIR), the woman, who approached the police at 1.30 am on July 3, had claimed that a man, who had identified himself as a delivery executive, came to her house on the pretext of delivering bank documents at around 7.30 pm on July 2. The woman claimed she was alone at home. She further said that after asking her to get a pen, he locked the door of her apartment from inside and raped her after spraying a substance on her face that rendered her unconscious. When she woke up after an hour, the suspect had fled, she had alleged. She had further claimed that the man had taken a selfie on her phone when she was unconscious and had left a threat message on it, saying he would return. However, following a massive police probe that involved close to 500 personnel and the examination of 500 CCTV cameras and voluminous technical leads, several contradictory facts came to the fore. According to the police, the probe revealed that the man was known to her for about a year after they connected socially; there was no forced entry into the apartment; the selfie was taken on her phone with her consent; no substance was sprayed on her; and the threat message on the selfie was later edited by the complainant herself.Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar had said, “Based on the various evidence that we have gathered, including the mobile communications, and also based on the sequence of events that has been ascertained, we have reached a conclusion that it is not a case of rape.”Story continues below this adIn one of his briefings on the case, Kumar had said, “It is worrying that the police were misled in this case. False complaints cast credibility issues on genuine complainants. It is a long-term disservice to the criminal justice system.”Click here to join Express Pune WhatsApp channel and get a curated list of our stories© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:pune
