Part 5 – Gifting the Dead with Your DeedsAllaah Ta’ala said{ لِّیُنذِرَ مَن كَانَ حَیࣰّا }《That he or it (Muhammad or the Quran) may give warning to him who is living》[Yā Seen – 70] Part 5 – The dead benefiting from the actions of the living & the difference of opinion regarding that انتفاع الميت من سعي الحي، والخلاف فيهالشيخ د. ربيع بن هادي المدخليرحمه اللّٰهBy Shaykh Rabee bin Hadi al-MadkhaliRahimahullaah Translated By Abbas Abu Yahya The question: The dead benefiting from the actions of the living & the difference of opinion regarding that The answer: Allaah Ta’ala said﴿وأنْ ليْس لِلْإِنْسانِ إِلّا ما سعىٰ﴾ [ النجم:39] This is the foundation of the one who says that a recitation of the Qur’aan does not reach the deceased, however, Dua and charity do reach as is affirmed in the Book and the Sunnah. Likewise, performing Hajj for close relatives is also affirmed in the Sunnah. Some of the people expand on that and say: reading Qur’aan reaches the dead, and even some of the virtuous Imams of Islaam hold this opinion, however, the correct position is that reciting Qur’aan for the dead opposes the Sunnah. This is because if the dead were to benefit from it the Messenger of Allaah -alayhi as-Salat wa as-Salaam- would not have withheld it from them. In fact, he would have read it himself for those who had died from his companions and relatives and would have ordered the Muslims to read Qur’aan upon their deceased, therefore, since he did not, then the Sunnah is to leave that which the Messenger alayhi as-Salat wa as-Salaam left off. This is because if an action could have been performed during the life of the Messenger of Allaah alayhi as-Salat wa as-Salaam and there was nothing to prevent him doing so, and he did not do so then the Sunnah is leaving off that action and doing so is a Bida. Therefore, what a lot of people do of reading the Qur’aan for the dead, they do this at gatherings for condolences for thedeceased, and with food and drink. All of this opposes the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah- alayhi as-Sallat wa as-Salam and it is from the Bida which the Messenger of Allaah- alayhi as-Sallat wa as-Salam, warned against. If it had been good, I swear by Allaah that the Messenger of Allaah would have preceded us in that, and likewise his Companions – May Allaah’s pleasure be upon them- would have preceded us.As for the actions of the Muslims of making Dua for them, seeking forgiveness for them, giving charity for them and doing Hajj for them then these deeds reach the dead. This is because the Messenger of Allaah – sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam- Informed us about that. As for reading the Qur’aan and that what is similar, then that has not been mentioned from the Prophet – alayhi as-Salat wa as-Salaam neither in a statement, or action, or a command, not in any way.’ [From ‘Awn al-Bari Bayan Maa Tadamanhu Sharh as-Sunnah lill Imam al-Barbahari p.405]Arabic Referenceانتفاع الميت من سعي الحي، والخلاف فيه – الشيخ د. ربيع بن هادي المدخليالسؤال : انتفاع الميت من سعي الحي، والخلاف فيه؟الجواب : قال تعالى: (وَأَنْ لَيْسَ لِلإِنسَانِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَى) [النجم: 39]، هذا الأصل الذي يتمسك به من يقول: لا يصل، ولكن الدعاء والصدقة هذه ثابتة بالكتاب والسنة، والحج عن الأقارب هذا ثابت بالسنة، وبعضهم يتوسعون ويقولون: قراءة القرآن تصل إلى الميت، وحتى بعض الأفاضل من أئمة الإسلام يرى هذا ، لكن الصواب في مثل قراءة القرآن على الأموات، أن هذا خلاف السنة؛ لأن هذا لو كان يستفيد منه الأموات ما ضن عليهم رسول الله عليه الصلاة والسّلام، بل كان يقرأ بنفسه على من مات من أصحابه وأقربائه، وكان يأمر المسلمين أن يقرؤوا القرآن على أمواتهم؛ وإذ لم يفعل ذلك، فإن السنة هي ترك ما تركه الرسول عليه الصلاة والسّلام؛ لأن العمل إذا وجد مقتضاه في حياة رسول الله عليه الصلاة والسّلام وانتفت موانعه ولم يعمله فإن السنة تركه، وعمله بدعة. فما يفعله الكثير من الناس من القراءة على الأموات، ويفعلون ذلك في مآتم، وأكل وشرب وتجمعات، و…و… إلى آخره، هذا كله خلاف سنة رسول الله عليه الصلاة والسّلام، ومن البدع التي حذر منها رسول الله عليه الصلاة والسّلام، ولو كان ذلك خيراً، والله لسبقنا إليه رسول الله، ولسبقنا إليه أصحابه عليهم الرضوان من الله تبارك وتعالى، عمل المسلمين، دعاؤهم، واستغفارهم لهم، وصدقتهم، والحج عنهم، هذه تصل إلى الأموات؛ لأن رسول الله ﷺ أخبرنا بذلك، أما قراءة القرآن وما شاكل ذلك فهذه لم يرد فيها عن النبي عليه الصلاة والسّلام قول ولا فعل ولا أمر ولا شي .• من كتاب (عون الباري بيان ما تضمنه شرح السنة للإمام البربهاري ص : 405).
