‘Disappointing’ – Daniel Dubois’ coach hits back at claims fighter quit in Oleksandr Usyk clash

Wait 5 sec.

Daniel Dubois’ trainer, Don Charles, was irked by suggestions that his fighter quit against Oleksandr Usyk on Saturday night.Usyk dropped Dubois twice en route to a fifth-round knockout win at Wembley Stadium for the undisputed heavyweight crown.Charles has rushed to his fighter’s defence after being branded a ‘quitter’QueensberryDubois made his way back to his feet after being dropped by a spiteful flurry midway through the frame. But the fight was waved off moments later when he was sent back down to the canvas by a clubbing left.Charles threw in the towel, although the referee had his back to Dubois’ corner, and so the ten count was completed. In the immediate aftermath of the crushing defeat, Dubois’ mentality came under fire, with several members of the boxing fraternity insisting he gave up after failing to beat the count.Charles adamantly disputes such claims and joined talkSPORT on Tuesday morning to have his say.“At that time, my instinct was to throw in the towel to save him from any further punishment in case he wanted to carry on,” he said.“I instinctively did that because of the actions he took [against Joe Joyce], taking a knee, which people mistranslated and started calling him a quitter for…“It is very disappointing, especially coming from current fighters and ex-fighters.“I’ll hold my hands up. We went into a fight. We prepared the best we could. “We got beat by the better man, an exceptional fighter who’s done a number on every Brit that’s been in there with him.”Dubois was knocked out by Dubois on Saturday night, but some claim he could have made his way to his feet soonerLeigh Dawney / QueensberryTop-rated heavyweights Joseph Parker and Lawrence Okolie were asked whether they thought Dubois quit during the most recent episode of the talkBOXING podcast.Okolie was reluctant to give a concrete answer, but Parker insisted that Dubois ‘swallowed it’.In response to those comments, Charles said: “It just so happens those two fighters who were in the studio yesterday are still active.“God willing, he is going to meet those two characters. Let’s see who swallows then. “Let’s see who is going to swallow and who is going to quit.”This isn’t the first time that Dubois’ mentality has been questioned.Dubois will now focus on rebuilding his careerGettyThe Brit was lambasted for seeing out counts on one knee against Joe Joyce in 2020, and Usyk, during their inaugural encounter, in 2023.A trio of gutsy wins over Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic and Anthony Joshua had gone a long way in shifting that perception. However, Dubois is back under the magnifying glass again following his most recent outing. For now, all he can do is go back to the drawing board. And at 27 years old, Dubois still has plenty of time to mount another charge at a world title.“I don’t know [what is next],” said Charles on Dubois’ next steps. “We haven’t had a meeting yet. “We’ve lost fights before. He is a young man and he’s intact.“He’s been checked out on fight night. He was coherent. He’s not concussed.“There is a meeting pending where Frank Warren and George [Warren] will read off the riot act because they are working hard on their end to present these opportunities, and we have to reassure them that a lot of things can be rectified.”
