Karun Nair looks to retain place in India's XI while Rishabh Pant is fit enough to keep. (AP)After the heartbreaking defeat at Lord’s in the third Test, India are left facing some interesting selection calls ahead of the fourth Test in Manchester starting on Monday, key among the bowling unit composition that is leading with some injuries and the critical No 3 batting slot. It’d seem Karun Nair will retain his place at the top order despite not having great returns in the series so far, while the pace-bowling make-up could come to a toss-up between Prasidh Krishna and new entrant to the squad Anshul Kamboj. In a positive development amid all the injury concerns, Rishabh Pant is set not just to be available to play but also keep wickets, after a hand injury hampered his glove work at Lord’s. While keeping in the first innings in the third Test, Pant suffered an injury to his fingers, which saw Dhruv Jurel come in as a substitute keeper for the remainder of the match. Since it was an impact injury substitute, Pant was able to bat in both innings. While England have confirmed their Playing XI in advance as usual, India have a few decisions to make before the coin goes up at Old Trafford. Captain Shubman Gill gave some pointers as to who will get the nod for the fourth Test.“We think Karun is batting well,” he told reporters on Tuesday about the comeback man, who has struggled to get going at No 3. “The first match he didn’t really play at his number (batted at 6). It’s difficult when a player is making a comeback in a series like this, you know. But I don’t think there’s been any issue with his batting. Sometimes it’s also about getting that click, you know. Once you’re able to make your 50, then you’re able to get back into your zone and get some big runs. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened for him so far.”After a double century in Canterbury in a tour match, followed by a 40 in Northampton in the second pratice game, Karun got his chance to return to Test cricket after a long gap. In the first Test, he got out on 0 and 20, batting at No 6. In the two Tests since, he made scores of 31, 26, 40 and 14, all at No 3 after India left out Sai Sudharsan. As far as bowling is concerned, Mohammed Siraj confirmed in the press conference on Monday that Jasprit Bumrah will indeed play in Manchester, despite the talk surrounding his workload management. But the think-tank has a couple of other calls to make with Nitish Reddy ruled out of the series and Akash Deep too nursing a niggle. Gill hinted that Kamboj – who had been called up to the squad as pace-bowling cover – could well be in line for a quick debut. “He is very close to making his debut. We’re going to see it tomorrow between him and Prasidh, who’s going to make it,” Gill said.Stay updated with the latest sports news across Cricket, Football, Chess, and more.
