A quick stroll through your grocery store’s cleaning aisle or a scroll through #CleanTok may have you considering a switch to laundry detergent sheets. Yes, there’s a lot to like about them. Laundry detergent sheets are solid, lightweight, and easy to use, and they come in recyclable, cardboard packaging. Unfortunately, our testing revealed a pretty major downside: They suck at removing stains, and they’re even worse at removing odor, especially in cold water. So when Tide Evo tiles debuted in 2024 — at SXSW, no less — we couldn’t help but wonder how they might stack up. These solid, fibrous detergent tiles share some positive attributes with laundry detergent sheets: Like laundry detergent sheets, Evo tiles are lightweight and easy to toss in the machine, and (to the delight of those trying to cut back on plastic packaging) they come in a recyclable cardboard box. Tide claims Evo detergent will beat any stains or odors thrown at it, even in cold water. If this is true, Evo tiles could be a laundry game changer.Tide Evo, which was originally sold only in Colorado, is now available nationwide in a Free & Gentle version. Could these unusual tiles be the solid detergent of the future? We gave them a try to find out.
