LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau has called for players to have their individual rounds timed. The American’s comments come after huge delays at The Open across the first two days, leading to some players being on the course for six hours.DeChambeau wants to see a drastic changeAFPCurrently, players are timed per shot, with the first player getting 50 seconds and each following competitor getting 40 seconds. However, they aren’t timed overall for walking around the course. At the moment, the only way a player can be punished for anything relating to time is if they take too long to have a shot.Even then, it is initially just a warning for a one-time violation before stroke penalties are introduced.US Open champion JJ Spaun was handed a warning for taking too long on a shot at hole 17 on round one, but he avoided any further punishment. However, with the pace of play a clear problem, DeChambeau has called for change.Speaking after a solid round three, the 2020 and 2024 US Open winner was asked about it and said: “It’s very simple. It’s not difficult at all.“You individually time everybody for their entire round – very simple.“Nobody wants to do it, just some people are scared to get exposed.”DeChambeau went on to say that he would be willing to do it and thinks it would massively improve the pace.Spaun was hit with a warning for slow play on ThursdayGettyHe continued: “I am an advocate to be timed, and I have no problem with that.“Everybody plays a different style, it’s just the way it is.“I just wish it was a new system. I think it’d be more fair towards everybody.“You would literally start and stop as and when needed .”The pace of play has been a talking point at Royal Portrush all weekend. After a round one was disrupted by rain and wind, many players ended up spending nearly half day on the course, leading to some angry comments.DeChambeau just about made the cut to seal his place in the last two roundsAustralia’s Marc Leishman said: “It felt like we were on the golf course for about 12 hours.“We’ve been on the course for three hours through eight holes.“That was tough to deal with, especially coming from somewhere where we play in under four and a half hours every week.”
