One may look trendier than the other, but for the sake of your shoulders you need to make a wise decision when choosing a bag. Laptop bags with a single strap, like messenger bags, are popular in professional settings because they provide accessibility and a fashionable appearance. “But with time, such bags can result in an uneven distribution of weight that can strain muscles and cause pain in the neck, back, and shoulder,” said Dr Akhilesh Yadav, associate director, orthopaedics and joint replacement, Max Hospital, Vaishali.Furthermore, these bags frequently have little capacity; so are not ideal for those who carry a lot of stuff. “Conversely, a backpack or two-side carry-on bag equally distributes weight across both shoulders, minimising strain and encouraging better posture,” said Dr Yadav.Agreeing, Dr Yugal Karkhur, senior consultant, orthopaedics, Narayana Hospital, Gurugram said that when comparing one-sided laptop bags to two-sided carry-on bags (backpacks) in terms of shoulder health and comfort, the latter generally has the advantage. “A shoulder bag places all the weight on one shoulder, leading to an uneven load that can cause discomfort and potential long-term issues such as poor posture and muscle imbalances. Backpacks distribute the weight more evenly across both shoulders, reducing the risk of muscle strain and shoulder pain,” said Dr Karkhur.Additionally, backpacks have several sections and more storage space, which makes them simpler to carry and organise items. “They might, however, be less practical and bulkier for easy access to objects. Regardless of the style of the bag, maintaining good shoulder health requires paying attention to your posture, keeping the weight low, and correctly adjusting the straps,” mentioned Dr Yadav.
