Sure, the white-domed family thrill ride has received numerous updates and changes over the years, but Space Mountain still very much is the same coaster it was in the 1970s, especially the version of the ride found in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.The original version of Space Mountain opened in 1975 inside Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland. The roller coaster quickly became a hit, making a West Coast version a top priority for the company. Disneyland’s Space Mountain opened just two years later in 1977. The rest, as they say, is history, with Space Mountain becoming not just one of Disney’s most popular and famous rides of all time, but one of the most influential attractions within the entire theme park industry.However, starting soon, Disneyland’s version of Space Mountain will arguably be the most unique.Disneyland Confirms Marvel Makeover for Space Mountain ExteriorCredit: DisneyRelated: Disney Brings Back Canceled Marvel Movie as Robert Downey Jr. Takes Over MCUBeginning July 25, the iconic facade of Disneyland’s Space Mountain will light up with special projection effects in celebration of the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025). The film releases on the same day, with Disneyland going all out on Marvel’s first family.Not only will Space Mountain get the Marvel treatment, but visitors will also be able to see all four members of The Fantastic Four in person at the park.Alongside these new characters, special food and beverage items will launch across the Disneyland Resort. These new items include a new The Thing-inspired sipper cup and a Mister Fantastic straw clip. Special Fantastic Four-themed items and events will also be available at Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland Paris.Iterations of Disney’s classic Space Mountain also exist at Disney’s international resorts, such as Disneyland Paris, Tokyo Disneyland, and Hong Kong Disneyland. Of course, there are some key differences between all the versions of the ride, with Disneyland Paris’ version being the most intense.Tokyo Disneyland’s version of Space Mountain closed permanently in 2024 to make way for a totally reimagined take on the thrill ride. Space Mountain will be rebuilt from the ground up, complete with a new design and track layout. Concept art released last back in 2023 revealed a bold new vision for not just the coaster but the park’s entire Tomorrowland area.The project is estimated to cost roughly $500 million and is expected to be completed in 2027.Do you enjoy riding Space Mountain?
