The PDC calendar is jam-packed but Nathan Aspinall reckons one new tournament could be a game-changer for darts. In recent years, the sport has gone from strength-to-strength as a raft of new heroes create history at the oche.Aspinall has got another money-spinning idea for dartsGettyTeen sensation Luke Littler and former world champion Luke Humphries have led the way, inspiring a new generation to get into the arrows.Venues are full to the brim at home and abroad and Stockport-native Aspinall reckons he knows how to keep the punters coming. He said, per Oche 180: “One change I would make [to the circuit] is having a Ryder Cup-style tournament. “You could do the UK against the rest of the world. You’ve got all the Dutch players, all the Germans, the likes of Damon Heta and people like that. “You could do triples, pairs, and singles matches, it would be mega for players and fans. “If you did it somewhere like in the centre of Germany, and change every year, you could probably sell a 30,000-seater stadium comfortably, and it would create some atmosphere.” Aspinall did, though, warn that it would be difficult for the teams than some might imagine. The recent World Cup of Darts saw Littler and Humphries combine and instantly become favourites. However, they fell at the first hurdle losing 8-4 to seventh seed Germany, represented by Martin Schindler and Ricardo Pietreczko.“I think you’ve seen from the World Cup that you have to gel as a team,” said Aspinall.Littler, along with Humphries, proved winning as a team in darts isn’t as easy as you thinkGetty“Luke and Luke, even though they’re mates, they didn’t gel at the World Cup, which is why they didn’t get far.“You saw with Josh and Daryl, and Gezzy and Jonny, they clearly did gel, and that’s why they made the finals.“The only issue is that there is that much going on in darts at the moment, I think the PDC is going to leave it as it is for now.“You never know, in the future it might be something that they look into.”Aspinall will face Wessel Nijman on the first night of the 2025 World Matchplay. He’ll be hoping to continue his recent good form having won the European Darts Open at the start of June and reached the final of the US Darts Masters at the end of the same month, losing 8-6to Humphries.
