India star suffers freak injury in England Test match leading to him being taken off in ambulance cart

India star Rishabh Pant suffered a bizarre injury during the first day of the Fourth Test at Old Trafford that saw him taken off in a buggy.India’s wicket keeper was on 37 when he attempted an ambitious reverse sweep against Chris Woakes only to be struck on the side of the foot.  GettyPant need a golf buggy to take him away[/caption]England went up for LBW and pursued it with a review, but while attention was on the big screen, (replays showing an inside edge) the player was on the ground in distress. It took a few moments for the England team and the fans to realise Pant was in trouble, but after TV footage picked up his pained reaction and his swollen foot, the gravity of the situation became clear.A stretcher was called for and Pant’s innings, potentially his Test, and maybe his series, came to an abrupt halt.As a result, Ravindra Jadeja stepped in for the vice captain and Pant was taken away.He had to be put onto an ambulance cart, which escorted him off the field. The BCCI are yet to provide an update on Pant, and we will wait to see if he comes out to bat and keep on day two.talkSPORT’s commentary team were left almost baffled by the incident when giving their view live on air.Neil Manthorp said: “It’s hit him right on the outside of the boot, and there is no protection there, so he needs some treatment.“He’s taken the sock off, and there is quite a big lump.“When something swells that quickly that can be indicative of a fracture.“It’s like an egg, and that’s not good at all.”Later, as Pant was taken off, Manthorp added: “There is a golf cart that has been turned into an ambulance coming on.Pant looked distraught as he was taken offGettyPant was on 37 off 48 balls before he had to retire injured“I am not sure he’ll be able to bat.“Poor old Rishabh Pant.”It was rare drama on a day that had for the most part followed the usual script with India happy to occupy the crease and let the runs come to them.  And much like the rest of the series, every time they got themselves ahead, they lost a wicket to bring England back into the contest. After a tumultuous, and at times, narky Lord’s Test which saw both sides lose their cool, the first session was played out under blanket clouds and in blustery conditions.Ben Stokes won the toss for the fourth game in a row and despite no team in the history of Test cricket winning a Test after inserting the opposition in Manchester, had no hesitation in bowling first.Stokes was perhaps mindful that England probably would have beaten Australia at Old Trafford if not for rain after doing the same thing – or more likely because he just thought it was the right thing to do in such bowling friendly conditions.View Tweet: https://twitter.com/hashtag/ENGvIND?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5EtfwAs it was India enjoyed the first session with both KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal batting through to go to lunch 78/0.But unlike most matches where a team opts to bowl first, there didn’t seem to be any pressure of panic from England, who duly hit back in the afternoon.First to go was KL Rahul (46), who edged into the slip cordon from the bowling of the excellent Woakes, who enjoyed reward for another probing spell. The second wicket was celebrated with even more gusto as the returning Liam Dawson snared Jaiswal on 58 caught at slip in his second over back into Test cricket. Shubman Gill (12) got off the mark first ball and looked in the kind of control that he appeared to have in the first two Tests of the series, so it was somewhat of a surprise when he shouldered arms to a delivery from Stokes that nipped back to trap him in front.India had gone from 94/0 to 140/3 and it would have been worse for them if Sai Sudharsen hadn’t been dropped on 20 by Jamie Smith.Stokes was the pick of England’s bowlers with two wicketsGettyAs it was, Sudharsen and Pant put on 71 before Pant’s untimely and unfortunate injury and it became 235/4 when Sudharsen (61) was caught on the pull.  However, Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja saw India through to stumps at 264/4 with the second new ball due in the morning and all of India awaiting news on Pant.
