‘Blown away’ – Browns increasingly intrigued with underrated QB’s one key skill as Shedeur Sanders battle heats up

Wait 5 sec.

Shedeur Sanders is expected to dominate the headlines around the NFL this summer, with training camp now in motion. The Cleveland Browns rookie stunned everybody when he slid all the way to round five of the 2025 NFL Draft, where the Browns selected him with the 144th overall pick — the organization’s fifth and final selection. The Browns’ QB rookies are battling away in the hope of making the final 53-man rosterGettyDillon Gabriel was selected some 50 picks earlier in the third round, joining a room which also features Kenny Pickett and 18-year veteran Joe Flacco to leave Cleveland in quite the predicament. With $230m Deshaun Watson sidelined for the 2025 season as he continues to rehabilitate a torn Achilles injury, the battle to be named the starting quarterback is well and truly underway. Fan-favorite Flacco is still tipped as the leading frontrunner for the job, but the intrigue surrounding rookie Gabriel is continuing to grow. The former Oregon standout has impressed in mini camp OTAs after getting some high-level reps, and now needs to showcase his skillset in training camp which he reported to last week, alongside his fellow rookies.Speaking on Sports4CLE, NFL Network’s Judy Battista discussed the Browns’ quarterback battle, and said that the bosses were particularly ‘impressed’ by Gabriel. “They (The Browns) are going to value processing time, decision making, that kind of thing. They want somebody that who is going to be able to run the offense, minimize mistakes, make good decisions,” Bautista said. “They used those words a lot; processing speed and decision making when they talked about Dillon Gabriel, especially in the spring.“Don’t forget, he has a whole lot of experience from college football, six years worth. So, they were impressed with his processing speed to the point where they said in the spring that they were putting more on his plate than they initially thought they were going to do for him. They kept giving him more information because he was absorbing it so much…“But if you’re looking at the quarterback competition, it’s really two quarterback competitions. The competition between the two rookies and then the competition between the two veterans…Keep an eye on Dillon Gabriel, who I think caught some eyes in the spring.”In his senior year – and his first at Oregon after transferring from Oklahoma – the 6-foot, 200-pound quarterback posted 3,857 passing yards, completing 72.9 percent of his passes for 30 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. The Browns have four quarterbacks battling for the starting role in 2025GettyGabriel is thought to have impressed many around the Browns organizationGettySanders hasn’t given up in his own pursuit of becoming the Browns’ QB1GettyHe rushed for an additional 149 yards and seven touchdowns as he led the Ducks to a 13-1 record in the Big Ten Conference. When asked whether Gabriel could make a push for the starting job come Week 1, Browns reporter Tony Grossi doesn’t think so just yet, but he maybe could be in the future. “No, I think that’s stretching it,” Grossi said. “If you look at our quarterback tracker, he [Gabriel] had more pass attempts than anyone. By about 20, Gabriel did. “They exposed him to the No. 1 defense. They gave him things. His numbers weren’t as great as Shedeur’s because they were giving him more complicated stuff. “But all of that attests to the point that they are intrigued by Dillon Gabriel. They think from the neck up, they think he’s a No. 1 pick.”With the hype beginning to build around Gabriel, what could this mean for Sanders and his future? It’s expected that at least one of the four quarterbacks on the Browns depth chart will be cut ahead of the final 53-man roster announcement, but who that may be, though, is very much up in the air. Sanders – son of NFL legend Deion – isn’t giving up in his pursuit of being named the Browns’ starting quarterback, though, having been spotted undertaking midnight workouts, and receiving individualized training by a specialist quarterback coach. In two seasons under center for the Colorado Buffaloes, Sanders completed 651-907 (71.8 percent) of his passes for 7,364 yards. He also threw for 64 touchdowns and just 13 interceptions, breaking over 100 school records along the way, including number of passing touchdowns and quarterback rating.NFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare? With that in mind, the Athletic’s Zac Jackson discussed three things that Sanders can do to give him the best chance of not only making Cleveland’s 53-man roster, but perhaps also earning a chance to win the starting job.“Sanders showed in the spring that he’s capable of throwing with touch and accuracy,” Jackson wrote. “In a wide-open, four-man quarterback competition this summer, Sanders will have to show he’s capable of commanding the huddle, mastering the playbook and avoiding some mistakes against pressure that evaluators didn’t like from the tape.“The Browns aren’t counting on Sanders to be ready right now, but their quarterback competition could go a dozen ways – and Sanders could eventually find himself on the field as a rookie if he performs well this summer.”Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our NFL Facebook page, subscribe to our talkSPORT End Zone YouTube channel for all the offseason news, interviews and more.
