What Tottenham success would look like for Thomas Frank in four competitions this season - Opinion

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank knows exactly what success would look like this season, but the demands of four different competitions mean there is little margin for error.Thomas Frank would be delighted with the start his Tottenham Hotspur side has had under him, following their 2-0 win against Reading in their first pre-season friendly match. There is still room for improvement, though, and Frank would be hoping for better performances throughout the remaining four pre-season clashes that Spurs have left. The Tottenham manager has since opened up on what he thinks success in his first season would look like, stating that being competitive in all competitions, like Mauricio Pochettino’s 2019 side, would be great progress.Spurs are set to play in four competitions next term, including the UEFA Champions League, the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup and the Premier League, but what should Frank be aiming for in each competition? Here is what we think.Credit: Tottenham HotspurTottenham fans won’t blame Thomas Frank for overlooking the Carabao CupThe Carabao Cup is one of the cup competitions that does not have the greatest of prestige when compared to the other tournaments Tottenham would be competing in. In 2019, Spurs went all the way to the semi-final of the Carabao Cup, before they were eliminated by Chelsea 4–2 on penalties. Indeed, for new boss Thomas Frank, that would be an outstanding feat to reach; however, many Tottenham fans would rather the club win the entire competition than go far into it and lose.Games would come thick and fast, and the further Spurs go in the Carabao Cup, the more games they are bound to play. Of course, if there is sufficient depth in the squad, then it could be easy to manage, but if there is none, then it could get very difficult. In all, the Carabao Cup is one competition that Frank could win, and it would be great for Tottenham as they get to keep that winning culture, but no sweat would be lost if Spurs were eliminated early on in the competition.A deep FA Cup run would be welcomed by Spurs fansThe FA Cup, however, is far different to the Carabao Cup and for Tottenham, going far in this competition would be perfect. The last time Spurs won the FA Cup was back in the 1990/91 season, which is well over three decades ago. Pochettino’s 2019 side did not even manage a deep run in the cup competition, as they were knocked out in the fourth round, just like Spurs were last season.Given the history and prestige of the FA Cup, being one of the oldest trophies in England, if Frank were to deliver this as his only piece of silverware, along with a respectable league finish, then it would be a successful first season as Tottenham boss.Thomas Frank will want to get Tottenham into Premier League top sixLike it or not, the Premier League is the bread and butter for every top-flight side, and Daniel Levy’s decision to sack Ange Postecoglou last season, despite winning the Europa League, is enough proof of how important it is to stay competitive in the league. It is clear to see why, as sides that secure a top four finish and get a spot in the UEFA Champions League are guaranteed a £100 million financial windfall, a significant amount that is not earned from any other competition. That is why Frank has to ensure he remains very competitive in the Premier League, as Spurs would not tolerate a mediocre campaign in the top flight like that of last season. For fans, a top-four finish would be ideal; however, a top-six finish would be respectable, with the view that it would only get better in the following season.A Champions League quarter-final would be great for SpursSpurs have not been in the Champions League since the 2022/23 season, and thanks to Postecoglou’s Europa League win, they can now compete with some of Europe’s elite.Tottenham have never won the Champions League, with the furthest they have gone in that competition being the final, which Pochettino’s side achieved back in 2019.Another final run and another European triumph would be the dream of every Tottenham fan, and it very much will be welcomed by Frank. However, at the moment, Spurs are not yet at that level. A run to the quarter-final in the 25/26 season would be a respectable one for a team like Tottenham, who have a manager who has no experience managing in Europe’s elite competition.READ MORE: Heung-min Son is not ruling out an interesting January compromise with TottenhamThe post What Tottenham success would look like for Thomas Frank in four competitions this season - Opinion appeared first on Spurs Web.
