By Mulengera ReportersKawempe North MP Erias Nalukoola Luyimbazi recently was confronted by Latif Ssebaggala who demanded to know why he has treated him ungratefully. Latif, who is vying for Kawempe Mayoral seat on the NUP ticket, naturally expected Nalukoola to be grateful and keep on his side since they are both from Kawempe North and have a lot of political history working together since their days in DP.To his dismay, Nalukoola refused to openly associate with his campaign caravan, only promising never to publicly antagonize him. He politely made it clear to him that he appreciates their days of working together since DP times but Emmanuel Sserunjogi Ow’eddembe, with whom he is competing for the Mayoral seat, is much more important to him in the contemporary political set up than him.Nalukoola explained that, as incumbent Mayor, Ow’eddembe had done a lot to bolster his campaigns against NRM’s Faridah Nambi during the recent Kawempe North by-election campaigns. It was indicated to Latif that Ow’eddembe has a lot of established campaign structures in the two Kawempes which Nalukoola wouldn’t want to antagonize as that can complicate, as opposed to easing, his reelection efforts. It was also indicated to Latif Ssebaggala that openly fraternizing with him would be politically costly for Nalukoola because Bobi Wine’s brother Fred Nyanzi (eyeing Kawempe South) had drawn up a list of people he prefers to have elected on the NUP flag in the entire Kawempe Division and unfortunately the man who served as Kawempe North MP for 25 years doesn’t feature on that list. This candid talk by Nalukoola greatly hurt Latif Ssebaggala who considered it betrayal but remains committed to soldiering on and go down fighting no matter how many former allies turn their back on him for fear of Fred Nyanzi who is deeply in political bed with Dr. Emmanuel Sserunjogi Ow’eddembe. Kawempe is of great importance to NUP, especially Kawempe South, because it houses the headquarters of the party at Kavuve.
