Heroes get remembered but legends never die.Pat Tillman’s legacy lives as proof.Tillman has a statue outside State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.GettyThe former Arizona Cardinal and USA veteran was just 27 years old when he was tragically killed overseas in Afghanistan in a friendly fire accident.Tillman starred as a linebacker for Arizona State from 1994-1997, earning All-American honors and leading the Sun Devils to a Rose Bowl appearance, before the Cardinals drafted him in the seventh round with the 226th pick.He was quickly moved to safety, and against all odds as a late round pick, made the final roster in his rookie year. From there, Tillman’s star blossomed on the field out in the desert. He played four seasons for the Cardinals before heroically turning down a three-year, $3.6 million offer to return, instead enlisting in the U.S. Army after the 9/11 attacks. It stunned the NFL community, but not to those who really knew him.“He always wanted to try to do the right thing — not that he did the right thing all the time, but he tried — and he defended his friends whenever they were in some kind of trouble,” his mother told ESPN last year, two decades after his tragic passing.“I just think it [the 9/11 attacks and their aftermath] trivialized football … and I think he felt like he should do more.”Tillman and his younger brother enlisted in May 2002. He was first deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, and later sent to Afghanistan in 2004—where he never returned home.Tillman’s death was embroiled in controversy after initial reports falsely claimed he was killed by enemy combatants.Pat Tillman became a legend for his serviceGettyThe Cardinals have since retired Tillman’s No.40GettyHowever, after a long and thorough investigation by the U.S. Department of Defense and Congress, it was revealed that Tillman’s death had come as a result of friendly fire. The news was as sad as it was shocking.Memorials and tributes poured in after the initial news broke of Tillman’s death. The Cardinals retired his number 40, while his alma mater did the same in Tempe with number 42.The franchise also built a bronze statue outside of their stadium to immortalize Tillman and his legacy.Even 20 years later, his impact on the franchise, the NFL, and the country as a whole can be felt daily.
