History has been made in Malta as Nathan Zahra Piscopo officially becomes the first male midwife to graduate from the University of Malta, earning a First Class Honours degree in Midwifery.Sharing the news online, Nathan described the achievement as the result of “four years of hard work, passion, and dedication”, thanking his family, friends and especially the many women and families who allowed him to be part of their most intimate and life-changing moments.Nathan’s journey was already in the spotlight during his studies, with many recognising the significance of a man entering a traditionally female-dominated profession. In earlier interviews, he recalled how his compassion and early interest in healthcare were met with support from those around him – even if the idea of a male midwife was still uncommon locally.“I wasn’t even sure that I could enter the course,” he had previously said. “But people around me told me, ‘We can imagine you as a male midwife.’”His professors and colleagues welcomed him with open arms, praising his empathy, drive and ability to offer both emotional and physical support to women in one of the most important moments of their lives. Now, with his studies complete and a new chapter beginning, Nathan is not only paving the way for more men to enter the field, but also challenging outdated gender roles in healthcare.Congratulations, Nathan – you’ve made history, and Malta’s proud.•
