Three days after a second-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student at Sharda University in Greater Noida allegedly died by suicide, accusing two faculty members of “harassment” in a note, the university suspended three more teachers on Monday.The two professors named in the note, Dr Shairy Vashist and Dr Mahinder Singh Chauhan, were arrested on Saturday and suspended by the varsity.The university has initiated an inquiry, an official said, adding that a high-level committee will submit a report soon.Greater Noida Additional DCP Sudhir Kumar told The Indian Express that they are looking into every detail of the case, “including the delay in informing the police”.Sarvesh Singh, SHO, Knowledge Park, said, “The college has begun an inquiry; its probe will also determine the source of negligence. It is clear they informed us late… two hours after they learnt about the incident.”On July 18, Jyoti (21) was found hanging in her hostel room. Naming six people in the purported suicide note, she said she was humiliated, mentally harassed and was under stress for a long time. “I am sorry. I cannot live like this anymore. I can’t,” she wrote.Referring to the post-mortem report, Singh said, “It mentions ‘asphyxia’ due to hanging.”Story continues below this adAccording to police, during questioning, Dr Chauhan claimed the matter began over her allegedly forging his signature. “She had forged my signature in one of her practicals. We also called her parents regarding this,” he allegedly told police.In his police complaint, Jyoti’s father, Ramesh Jangra, had alleged that the “university’s administrative officials and workers brought her body down from the noose and took it to Sharda Hospital without informing the police or the family”.Responding to the claims, Dr Ajit Kumar, Public Relations Officer, Sharda University, told The Indian Express on Monday that the high-level committee would submit its report as soon as possible. “We asked for five days but we will try to finish it within the next two to three days. The university has also suspended three more teachers in this case and an inquiry is underway,” he said.Kumar said the probe is focused on three issues: “We’re looking at whether she was incited by someone to die by suicide. We are looking into her movements inside the hostel premises and will investigate the role of the college administration.”Story continues below this ad“Based on the report, strict action will be taken against whoever is at fault,” he added.Asked about the initial inquiry over her attendance, he said the student had secured 61.5% marks in the first year and a score of 369 out of 600.“However, her attendance in two subjects — Dental Material and Pre Clinical Prosthodontics — was low. We take attendance online. She only attended 33% of the total classes,” Kumar added.On being asked about the delay in reporting the matter to the police and informing the family, Kumar said the college’s priority was to ensure medical attention.Story continues below this ad““We have a hospital on campus, just 100 metres from her hostel. We decided to take her there for emergency care. However, we will inquire why the police weren’t informed promptly,” he said.
