If you've been in touch with the mobile blogosphere even remotely in recent weeks, you most likely heard about Samsung unveiling the thinnest and lightest Z Fold smartphone at Unpacked 2025.Now, if you're interested in the technical details, Samsung's got you covered. The company recently went into more detail about the key design elements that make up the Galaxy Z Fold 7's outstanding build. And here they are.Stronger materials, a redesigned hinge, and moreAccording to Samsung, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is 48% thinner than the Galaxy Z Fold 6 without sacrificing durability. On the contrary, the new foldable phone uses stronger materials and cleverer engineering to maintain and enhance structural stability.First things first, the Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 cover screen protection is 30% stronger, and the new Advanced Armor Aluminum used for the Z Fold 7 frame is 10% tougher than the Fold 6's Armor Aluminum material. As for the hinge and foldable display, here are the key design and engineering elements that helped the Galaxy Z Fold 7 become the thinnest and lightest without compromising durability.A new (third-generation) Armor FlexHingeThe Galaxy Z Fold 7 boasts a new hinge that allows the phone to achieve its thin profile without lowering structural rigidity. This new hinge is 43% lighter and 27% thinner than the one inside the Fold 6. Here is how this is possible.New Armor FlexHinge uses thinner critical rotating and supporting elements.Samsung manufactured it from new alloy components that increase strength and allow for effortless folding.Samsung added structural stability and greater design flexibility through separate supporting and rotating functions. The new hinge has a wingplate that opens wider, which distributes stress over a wider area and contributes to a less visible crease across the foldable panel.Thinner and better foldable displayIn addition to the reengineered Armor FlexHinge, Samsung also improved the Galaxy Z Fold 7's displays, particularly the foldable panel itself. Here is how.The Z Fold 7 foldable display's Ultra-Thin Glass layer is 50% thicker. This makes the panel stronger and less susceptible to creasing.Despite the 50% thicker UTG, the whole foldable display assembly is thinner. Samsung achieved this by reoptimizing the panel structure and utilizing new advanced materials. The foldable display is even more resilient thanks to a titanium-based lattice (backplate) that replaced the carbon fiber solution used previously. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 did lose some features along the way, such as S Pen support and the Under-Display Camera. However, these trade-offs are arguably worth it. In terms of build quality and engineering, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 sounds like one of the most advanced Samsung phones to date.Whether or not it will hold up better than the Fold 6 in the real world remains to be seen, but Samsung's claims sound promising. We will find out soon enough, though. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 pre-order window will close later this week, and the phone will be readily available globally on July 25.
