Bartica, a small mining township along the Essequibo River in Region Seven, has long been considered a PNC/APNU stronghold. For decades, the PNC, which is the majority partner in the APNU, maintained a dominant presence in the area. However, in the 2023 local government elections, the PPP/C made significant inroads, capturing the chairmanship after a very close contest that left both parties tied in council seats.The numbers highlight this shift. In 2023, the PPP/C increased its votes in Bartica to 1,784, up from 1,145 in 2018, while APNU’s votes declined from a combined 1,867 (with AFC) in 2018 to 1,601 on its own in 2023.
