Bartica, a small mining township along the Essequibo River in Region Seven, has long been considered a PNC/APNU stronghold. For decades, the PNC, which is the majority partner in the APNU, maintained a dominant presence in the area. However, in the 2023 local government elections, the PPP/C made significant inroads, capturing the chairmanship after a very close contest that left both parties tied in council seats. The numbers highlight this shift. In 2023, the PPP/C increased its votes in Bartica to 1,784, up from 1,145 in 2018, while APNU’s votes declined from a combined 1,867 (with AFC) in 2018 to 1,601 on its own in 2023. Similar trends were observed in the wider Region Seven during the 2020 general elections, where APNU secured 4,813 votes to PPP’s 3,728.With the September 1, 2025 general and regional elections approaching, APNU has unveiled Bartica’s own Juretha Fernandes as their prime ministerial candidate.Fernandes, who brings strong ties to the area and experience in finance, has been clear about her priorities. At Saturday’s rally,  the launch of the APNU’s campaign in Region Seven, she outlined plans to improve the quality of life for Bartica’s residents and to ensure development reaches all corners of the community. Her solutions include increased social support, improved pension benefits, cost-of-living assistance, affordable housing, support for small businesses and empowerment of Indigenous communities. While acknowledging the efforts made by various administrations, Fernandes stresses the need for sustained and inclusive development, ensuring that no one is left behind. The upcoming elections will test whether Fernandes and APNU can rebuild momentum in Bartica and Region Seven. With her deep roots in the community and a platform centred on practical support and development, Fernandes is positioning herself as a candidate who understands the challenges of her hometown. The post Juretha Fernandes: The Bartica-born PM candidate aiming to reclaim ground for APNU appeared first on News Room Guyana.
