Patrick Mahomes’ latest weapon gets rave reviews in training camp and he could solve Chiefs major issue

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs look to have added a brand new weapon in rookie offensive tackle, Josh Simmons. The former San Diego State and Ohio State Buckeye was the four-time Super Bowl champions’ first-round selection in the 2025 NFL Draft.Simmons has been impressive in his first few months as a proGettyHe was selected with the 32nd overall pickGettyWith Chiefs training camp now in full swing, the 6-foot-6, 330-pound tackle has been a standout in its early phases.Chiefs rookie Josh Simmons is an NFL Draft stealPlaying at left tackle in the first few days of training camp, Fox Sports’ Geoff Schwartz has been so impressed, that he made the admission that he feels that Kansas City and co got a ‘steal’ of a player. “The Chiefs got a steal with Simmons. He was considered OT1 before he got hurt,” Schwartz wrote on X. “Now he’s LT1 in camp while [Jawaan] Taylor is out. If he plays well enough the Chiefs will just stick with him.”Six-year veteran Jawaan Taylor has entered training camp on the PUP list as he continues to nurse a knee injury. ESPN draft and college football analyst Jordan Reid echoed a similar sentiment to Schwartz on the Chiefs rookie. “If fully healthy, there were some scouts that thought he would’ve been the first tackle off of the board. Would be a massive development for the Chiefs,” Reid posted on Tuesday.Of course, Simmons is eight months removed from a torn patellar tendon injury which he sustained last October. As a result it forced him to miss all but six games as the Buckeyes went on to clinch the National Championship after defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 34-23. His draft stock also took a small hit, with Simmons the fifth, and final, offensive tackle taken in the first round. LSU’s Will Campbell was the first to come off the board to the New England Patriots.Simmons’ draft stock fell after he missed most of 2024 with injuryGettySimmons (#71) has already begun to impress those in the Chiefs organizationGettyNonetheless, head coach Andy Reid – whose gruelling training camp is infamous – has given rave reviews about his 22-year-old rookie, stating that he is looking for consistency at the position to protect his superstar quarterback. “You’ve got to look for the best guy, I mean, to start with, that can fill in that spot, (so) that we can have a little consistency there,” Reid said, via Heavy. “We didn’t have that last year and so let’s work at it and see what we come up with. We’ve got some good candidates for it, and you know, we’ll just see where it goes.”Is Simmons the next Trent Williams?Simmons, who went viral for completing 33 bench press reps at Ohio State’s facility back in March which would have seen him tied for the most at the 2025 combine, has already impressed some of his new teammates too. Earlier on in the spring when teams had OTAs and mini camps, veteran tight end Travis Kelce admitted that he was impressed by the rookie offensive tackle. “He was playing defensive end as just like a scout team defensive end,” Kelce said on Simmons’ performances throughout OTAs and minicamp during an episode of their New Heights podcast in June.Mahomes and Reid have a new offensive weapon at their disposalGettySimmons has been likened to 49ers star tackle Trent WilliamsGetty“He was just playing his gap, but he was being a pro. He was being locked in and being a pro. “And I felt that man’s hands grab me, and I was like, ‘All right, I gotta come with it, even when he’s just giving the look. I gotta make sure I’ve got my feet planted, man.'”In response, Kelce’s brother – and New Heights co-host – Jason, likened Simmons to 11-time Pro Bowler, Trent Willams. “I’ve watched a lot of these linemen coming out (of college) the last few years,” said the former Philadelphia Eagles lineman.“This kid, I mean, he is the closest thing I’ve seen to like a Trent Williams … like that next level strength and athleticism. The only reason he fell to you guys is because of that injury.”San Francisco 49ers legend Williams is widely regarded as one of the greatest offensive tackles in the NFL, despite now being 37-years-old, so that is a huge compliment to Simmons’ play from the future Hall of Famer, even though he has yet to step onto an NFL field. If everyone were healthy, there was some speculation over what this would mean for Simmons, with the Chiefs having also bolstered their O-line by signing free agent Jaylon Moore to a two-year, $30 million deal. However, Moore has assumed responsibility at right tackle, allowing Simmons to command the left-hand side. Whether Moore will revert back to his preferred left tackle position by the start of the season, though, remains to be determined. But if Simmons does indeed turn out to be as good as he has so far been hyped up to be, this bodes well for two-time NFL MVP Mahomes as he would have a franchise left tackle for perhaps the remainder of his career. Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our NFL Facebook page, subscribe to our talkSPORT End Zone YouTube channel for all the offseason news, interviews and more
