HyderabadThe Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has initiated a series of targeted training programmes for drivers to improve road safety and reduce accidents. The move follows a high-level review meeting of senior TGSRTC officials on July 3, where it was noted that a focused approach was needed to reduce the number of road accidents involving buses. The consultations led to the decision that drivers involved in minor, major and fatal accidents, would undergo mandatory counselling to improve their driving behaviour and enhance awareness on road safety.TGSRTC officials then prescribed a four-day intensive training programme that commenced on July 21 at its zonal staff training centre in Hakimpet. This round of training was specifically designed for drivers. The sessions include case studies, PowerPoint presentations, and role-play exercises, all aimed at encouraging safer driving practices and bringing about greater sensitivity.A panel of expert trainers has been engaged, and a detailed curriculum has already been drawn up and implemented.A separate three-day training module was organised for drivers who had been involved in major or minor road accidents. This additional initiative is part of a broader institutional push to instil road discipline and ensure public safety. In addition, the Hyderabad Region of TGSRTC has launched a weekly programme titled Road Safety Mondays, aimed at keeping drivers updated on best practices and emerging techniques in road safety. These sessions are intended to serve as periodic refreshers for staff and to build a culture of continued awareness and responsibility.“Recently, we have started Road Safety Monday as part of gate meetings. Here there was an emphasis on not losing a single second of attention from the road. Alertness is key and this was explained through perception, meaning to identify the hazard, intellection to understand the road, volition meaning taking action, and emotion meaning deciding to act. We are also giving certificates to those who have participated,” said Regional Manager (Hyderabad) Sudha Parimala. Each Monday will deal with a separate road safety topic.Published - July 24, 2025 09:20 pm IST
