Ben Stokes achieved something no England captain has ever managed when he reached his century against India on Saturday. As Stokes tucked the ball away for four in the 145th over of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, he made history. Stokes has England’s Captain Fantastic at Old TraffordGettyEarlier this week, he starred with the ball in hand, bowling brilliantly and ending day two with figures of 5-72.It was his first five-wicket haul in eight years and left England with a great chance of wrapping the series up in Manchester. But he’s now continued his incredible form in this Test with the bat, proving why he’s one of the best all-rounders around. As England continued to extend their lead over India, Stokes reached 100 runs, with the crowd rising to their feet in admiration. It was Stokes’ 14th test century and first in two years, but it also marked his most special one by far, making history at the crease. He became the first ever England captain to take five wickets and hit a century in the same Test match. It is something that even all-round legend Freddie Flintoff didn’t manage during his England career. On top of that incredible achievement, he’s also now just the fourth English player ever to achieve the feat. Only Tony Greig, Ian Botham, and Gus Atkinson have done so before.Greig hit 100 runs and took five wickets in 1974 and Atkinson did it last year, while Botham incredibly managed it FIVE times.View Tweet: https://twitter.com/IGcom?ref_src=twsrc%5EtfwTest captains with 100 runs and 5 wicketsBen Stokes – vs India (2025) Imran Khan – vs India (1983) Mushtaq Mohammad – vs West Indies (1977) Garry Sobers – vs England (1966)Denis Atkinson – vs Australia (1955) To continue the stats, Stokes is just the fifth Test captain in cricket history to achieve the feat. And he’s the first to do so in 42 years.
