Samsung’s smart monitors deserve more credit than I first gave them

Samsung is one of the very few display manufacturers that create PC monitors featuring TV remote controllers and built-in TV apps, i.e., smart monitors. Admittedly, I have long wondered why someone would pay extra for a PC display that has smart TV capabilities. It seemed pointless at first. However, the more I thought about it, the more it started to make a certain amount of sense, at least for some niche scenarios.I wouldn't necessarily buy a Samsung smart monitor over a regular PC screen, as I personally don't have a use case for it. Nevertheless, after giving it some thought over the years, I have come to a better understanding of why someone else might be interested in such a device. If you're wondering about it yourself, here's what I discovered.Smart monitors are better than I initially gave them credit forFirst, I want to address one of the key distinctions between a Samsung smart monitor and a Samsung smart TV.Although both device categories ship with a TV remote and feature the TV-grade Tizen OS experience, smart monitors don't have a cable TV connection. As such, you can't use your smart monitor to watch cable TV, but you can use it as a stand-alone device to access internet streaming apps like Netflix, just as you would on a regular smart TV.Generally speaking, I am a big fan of purpose-built devices and will choose them over hybrid solutions whenever I can.In other words, I don't play console video games on my monitor. I don't use my TV to play PC games. And I don't use a smart monitor to watch TV content.A smart monitor wouldn't be my first choice. But it might be yours, and I can now think of a few reasons why you might want to pay extra for a smart monitor. So without further ado, here are three reasons why a Samsung smart monitor could be a better fit than regular non-smart PC displays.Reason #1 why smart monitors can be usefulUsing a smart monitor as a secondary PC screen lets you watch TV content or YouTube while gaming or doing intensive tasks without straining your PC.This hybrid device gives you more flexibility. You can use a smart monitor as a secondary display for your PC to extend your workspace, or you can use it as a stand-alone internet TV while at your desk.In other words, this flexibility allows you to enjoy high-resolution streaming without worrying about its effects on your PC's performance. And while using your PC for TV content can sometimes feel like overkill, a smart monitor enables a higher energy efficiency.Reason #2 why smart monitors can be usefulIf you don't have a dedicated workspace and keep your PC in the bedroom, you can use a Samsung smart monitor — and its TV remote — as a TV alternative when not at your desk.Granted, if you already have a TV in your bedroom for those moments when you want to watch TV in bed, a smart monitor won't make a difference. However, if you're low on space and would like to use your PC monitor as a bedroom TV when you're not at your desk, a smart monitor makes sense. Not only can you enjoy TV content without having to keep your potentially noisy PC turned on, but you also have the convenience of a TV remote. Let's face it: bringing your keyboard and mouse in bed is far from ideal.Reason #3 why smart monitors can be usefulOnce old enough, a non-smart monitor has the risk of becoming useless. However, a smart monitor can be repurposed more easily.Think about it. You might use a smart monitor as your main PC display today, but in a few years, you could repurpose it as an internet TV for your kitchen, workshop, or other room. You can't easily or conveniently do that with a regular PC monitor. That makes smart monitors more future-proof than regular PC screens. Once a smart monitor can no longer fulfill its primary purpose, it's easier to find a secondary use for it.All things considered, smart monitors can be a fantastic choiceAlthough I wouldn't choose a smart monitor for my use case(s) at the moment, I now better understand why they exist, and I believe they have a place on the market. If you've wondered about their usefulness as I did, I hope this article will give you a new perspective. And if you're in the market for a new PC monitor, consider your use cases. You might reach an unexpected conclusion. Although you never want to pay extra for features you won't use, you might be surprised to find that a smart monitor might be worth it.
