Mellieħa mayor, Gabriel Micallef, reached out to ERA, Public works, Transport Malta, Qawra Police station and Community Policing Team Mellieħa regarding a precarious rock overhanging bathers. Micallef asked the relevant authorities to consider temporarily closing the affected area, install appropriate warning signage regarding the danger of falling rocks and assessing whether safety measures are needed to prevent access. The Local Council told Lovin Malta that “it is very concerning for us to note that in such cases, the situation often ends up in a bureaucratic process, making it difficult, sometimes even impossible, to react and respond to the needs before an accident occurs.”Mellieħa’s executive secretary confirmed that the rock is cracked and dislodged from the sound part of the ground, in his communication to Civil Protection Department, ERA and the Public Works Department. The council’s statement went on to say that “the police were quick to go on site following reports and identified the necessary issues; however, safety precautions have yet to be introduced.
