Building declared unsafe by MCD collapses in North Delhi’s Sabzi Mandi, no casualties reported

(Express photo)A four-storey building collapsed in Punjabi Basti in North Delhi’s Sabzi Mandi, in the early hours of Tuesday, trapping 22 people in the debris. No casualties were reported, officers said.According to police, the incident came to light around 3 am through a PCR call, following which a team led by Inspector Banwari Lal, Station House Officer (SHO) of Subzi Mandi police station, rushed to the spot. The collapsed building, located near Buta Singh Gurudwara, was already vacant, but the impact damaged adjoining houses, trapping residents inside, said officers.“Two fire brigades, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team, six PCR vans, four ambulances and staff from Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) office also reached promptly at the site…The people, who were stuck in the adjacent building due to partial structural damage, were safely rescued and there was no casualty. Some of the injured persons were taken to the Bara Hindu Rao Hospital where they were admitted for treatment, and later discharged,” said DCP North, Raja Banthia.Portions of two nearby buildings were damaged in the collapse, while several parked vehicles, including motorcycles and a car, were also crushed, officers said.Police said the building was in a dilapidated condition and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had been informed earlier about its state. “Prior intimation regarding the building’s condition had already been given to MCD by local police,” said Banthia.As per a MCD statement, the collapsed building was declared dangerous during regular inspection.The civic body stated that the building was vacated in the last week of August.The work to remove the rubble is being carried out by MCD with the help of other agencies. In late July, a wall collapse crushed and killed a mother and son duo in a construction site in North Delhi’s Civil Lines area, near the Delhi Lieutenant Governor’s residence.In early August, a wall collapse near a slum in Jaitpur area of South Delhi killed seven, including two children.
