Jail staff arrested for smuggling drugs into Bengaluru Central Prison

A jail staff member of the Parppana Agarahara Central Prison in Bengaluru has been arrested for smuggling hashish oil and gutka packets concealed in his peaked cap into the prison.The accused, identified as Kalappa H. Abachi, was allegedly held with 100g of hashish oil worth ₹1 lakh and 12 packets of gutka wrapped in plastic tape and concealed in his peaked cap.According to the police, Abachi, an ex-serviceman, had taken voluntary retirement and joined the Prison Department under the ex-servicemen quota in 2018. He had earlier served as a warder at Dharwad Prison and was transferred to Bengaluru Central Prison three months ago.According to Parappana Agrahara police, Abachi was on duty at the prison, and the items were recovered during a security check on Sunday night.The contraband was seized, and a case was registered under the NDPS Act and Section 42 of the Karnataka Prisons Act.Probe revealed that Abachi was supposed to hand over the drugs to a Mangaluru-based under-trial lodged in the central prison.
