After six years since its bifurcation from Vellore in 2019, Ranipet district gets its first mobile police check-post in Arakkonam town, aiming to prevent crime and smuggling of banned products into the district.Accompanied by Superintendent of Police (SP) Ayman Jamal, Collector J. U. Chandrakala inaugurated the new check-post that comes under the Arakkonam Town police limits. At present, the district has 17 check-posts including nine permanent ones. “As it is located on the sensitive inter-district border, the check-post can be moved to any spot where there is a need for continuous surveillance,” Ms. Jamal told The Hindu. Funded under District Collector’s CSR fund, the new check-post, which was built at a cost of ₹2.75 lakh, has a few rooms for police personnel to change duties. On an average, the check-post has at least three police personnel led by a sub-inspector as vehicles, mainly goods, laden lorries and trucks, cross the facility round the clock. The check-post is fitted with high-powered Automatic Number-Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. The ANPR cameras will not only capture images of vehicles and number plates but would also provide live feed to the control room that has been set up at the Collectorate, SP office and the Department of Mines, which handles sand mining on Palar river. Each ANPR camera can store data for 15 days.Police said that the new mobile check post has advanced facilities including fingerprint scanners, round-the-clock power supply from solar and diesel generators, wireless gadgets, make-shift tents, emergency lamps and torches. Unlike permanent border check-posts, the new facility is aimed to move quickly to sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents and to provide field reports to the district police headquarters at Ranipet town.At present, the district police cover 250 kms of patrolling every day, connecting surrounding districts like Tiruvallur, Vellore, Kancheepuram and Tiruvannamalai. Among them, the Bengaluru Highway between Pilayar Kuppam and Poonumani Pattarai in Ranipet is the longest distance of 48 km followed by the Madras - Kochi Road with 26 km that comes under Ranipet police district limits.Published - September 11, 2025 09:00 pm IST
