(Express Photo by Amit Chakravarty)In a respite from the high temperatures, Mumbai is slated to experience a resurgence in rains over the weekend, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounding a fresh yellow alert in the city and its neighbouring districts between Saturday and Sunday.After experiencing a rainy Ganesh Chaturthi, rains subdued considerably in the city since Monday. Records show that between Wednesday and Thursday morning, the suburban Santacruz station and Colaba coastal observatory clocked in NIL rainfall. In the absence of showers, temperatures soared significantly across the city. On Thursday, maximum temperatures touched 31.5 degrees in the suburbs, while in the island city division, temperatures spiked to 31.2 degrees as rain continued to elude the city.For three consecutive days, day time temperatures surpassed 31 degrees, leaving the city sweltering. In what will likely spur a dip in temperatures, the weather bureau forecast heavy showers in the city over the weekend. In its latest forecast bulletin, IMD has placed Mumbai and Thane districts under a yellow alert for two days, starting Saturday, amid the possibility of thunderstorms coupled with heavy rainfall and gusty winds. Meanwhile, Raigad and Ratnagiri districts have been placed under an orange alert during the weekend owing to likely ‘heavy to very heavy’ rainfall. For Mumbai, September is the driest and the last monsoon season month, with the city typically receiving 359.6 mm rain during the month.
