Water has reappeared in the Rivers of America at Magic Kingdom Park. Crews began draining the waterway around Tom Sawyer Island in July, shortly after both Frontierland areas officially closed to construct two Cars (2006)-themed attractions.Walt Disney World Resort announced this massive change for Magic Kingdom Park over a year ago at D23 Expo 2024. Over the last few months, Disney Parks fans have learned more about the changes coming to Frontierland. The Cars-inspired area, Piston Peak National Park, will be designed to reflect the natural beauty of America’s national parks and incorporate several existing features, including barrel bridges and parts of the Rivers of America. It will feature two rides: a thrilling rally race and a family-friendly attraction.Credit: DisneyDespite some fan backlash about the changes, Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat closed permanently on July 7, 2025. Construction walls appeared soon after, and the Walt Disney World Railroad began operating in shuttle mode between Frontierland, Main Street, U.S.A., and Fantasyland. Over the last several weeks, Disney Park guests have spotted Walt Disney Imagineers surveying Tom Sawyer Island, tagging props for destruction or archival preservation. Water levels in the Rivers of America slowly decreased until the waterway was dry, and construction equipment appeared in the riverbed. According to several Disney Park guest reports, heavy rainfall in Central Florida has refilled the Rivers of America, likely causing construction delays for the crews working on the Piston Peak National Park project. Eventually, crews will probably install drains and other infrastructure to prevent future water pooling in the area. Have you visited Magic Kingdom Park since the Frontierland construction began?
