Marc Guehi transfer collapse ‘could blow up in Liverpool’s face’ – Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher fears that Liverpool have still left themselves short at centre-back after Marc Guehi’s transfer collapsed, as they have “two starters and two understudies.”Liverpool were busy in the summer transfer window transforming their squad to build on their Premier League triumph, and were a signature away from bringing in 11 new players.Guehi’s proposed £35 million transfer was blocked after Crystal Palace pulled out of the agreement at the last hour, despite the centre-back having undergone his medical. It left Arne Slot with Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and new signing Giovanni Leoni as his specialist central options, which Carragher has argued leaves Liverpool with no competition.“It’s three games in, they’ve got nine points from nine and probably not played that well, and we all still say Liverpool are big favourites,” Carragher said on The Overlap. “But that is the one area [not signing Guehi] that could come back and blow up in their face.“What Guehi was giving Liverpool was competition at centre-back, they haven’t got that. They’ve got two starters and two understudies.“Joe Gomez, who is injury-prone himself, and the young lad who’s only 18, come from Italy. He’s going to be a good prospect, but what would happen if one of them had to play for a couple of months?“It’s a big difference.”Up until Palace’s late U-turn, Liverpool were planning with Guehi in mind for the season ahead, and the deal being pulled out from under them clearly dealt an untimely blow.Though Arne Slot emphasised after the win over Arsenal that Liverpool have strength in depth at centre-back, with Leoni not even making the bench due to the options he has throughout his squad. While five senior centre-backs may have been deemed too many to some, an injury or two significantly depletes options, especially when you consider Leoni, who is highly rated, is still only 18.Then you must also factor in the level of competition for places, which has been almost non-existent over the last couple of years, which Guehi was expected to inject at the back.Carragher will not be the only one with this concern, but as it stands, Liverpool will not be revisiting a deal for Guehi in January and would rather wait until he is a free agent next summer.
