The EFL are reportedly considering making multiple changes to the calendar next season – including an earlier start to the campaign.English Football League chiefs are reported to be assessing their options amid the ever-busy footballing schedule. The EFL could make some changes to the calendar next seasonGettyThis season, League One and League Two got started on August 1, with the Championship getting going on August 8 and the Premier League on August 15. The Carabao Cup kicked off on the week commencing August 11 after the second-tier had got underway. However, according to the Daily Mail, the EFL could now bring that start date forward. They are reported to be considering moving the Carabao Cup opening round to the first weekend of August and making them the first games of the new season. And that could mean the opening game of the 2026/27 campaign would be played on July 31, if a fixture is played on a Friday. This proposal is said to be one of multiple being discussed by the EFL board and a decision will be made following consultation with clubs. The matter is not going to be a simple one though, with September next season seeing a three-week international break. That is set to mean that Carabao Cup fixtures are likely to have to be played even earlier than this year, so they can avoid a clash with English sides featuring in European competition. The Daily Mail also states that some clubs are known to be concerned about the fact that the cup games could be moved forward. They are worried as it could rule out the chance for them to book in some friendlies against elite opponents, which are a strong source of cash flow for certain teams. First round Carabao Cup fixtures could get started at the end of JulyGettyHas the season started in July before? If the EFL do go ahead and bring the start date for the 2026/27 season forward to July, it wouldn’t be the first time.In 2022, the campaign got going in July due to the World Cup taking place in Qatar in the winter of that year. The schedule was re-shuffled for the tournament to allow for a mid-season domestic football break, when it took place. There is the next World Cup coming next summer too, with the final planned for July 19 as things stand. If the season is brought forward, then it could be getting going just over a week after the 2026 World Cup finishes. The EFL have declined to comment on reports that the changes are being discussed, according to the Mail.Newcastle are the current Carabao Cup holdersGettyAre any more changes planned? Last week, reports circulated that the EFL were also considering adding an eliminator round to the Championship play-offs. It would change from four teams to six, adopting a similar format to that of the National League. The team finishing fifth in the second tier would play eighth place and sixth would play seventh in one-off matches.A proposal has been put to clubs, with it being viewed to add some more jeopardy to the end of the Championship season. And clubs are reported to have so far given some positive feedback on the potential switch. However, the changes, which could also be rolled out into League and League Two, are only at an early stage of discussion.
