Desraj Singh, president of a small vegetable sellers’ association told The Indian Express that it has been 40 years he has been selling vegetables, but has not seen such high prices.Devastating floods that have wreaked havoc in the northern region are significantly impacting vegetable prices in Chandigarh too, with several items getting sold at prices two-three times more than seen recently.While some vegetables like bottle gourd (lauki), ridge gourd (torai), brinjal (baingan) reach Chandigarh via Punjab, beans and capsicum are transported from Himachal Pradesh.Desraj Singh, president of a small vegetable sellers’ association told The Indian Express that it has been 40 years he has been selling vegetables, but has not seen such high prices.“Even lauki and torai, which were not more than Rs 25 to Rs 30 per kg this season, have gone up to Rs 100-120 per kg. Also, brinjal that was initially being sold for Rs 20 per kg has shot up to Rs 100 per kg in the retail price,” Desraj said.“In my 40 years of this trade, I have never witnessed such high prices,” he added.Because of floods in Punjab, these vegetables, which were coming from Ferozpur and Amritsar, are now coming from Madhya Pradesh, thereby raising the prices.Desraj added that green capsicum, which was about Rs 35 per kg this season, has shot up to Rs 150 per kg. Prices of peas have jumped to Rs 180-200 per kg.Story continues below this ad“Beans are being sold for Rs 120 per kg which were just Rs 40-50 kg. Even peas have touched Rs 200 per kg,” he added.Praveen Kumar, another vegetable seller, specified that the prices of those coming from Solan and Lahaul Spiti have skyrocketed because of the rain situation in Himachal Pradesh.“Tomato and onion prices, though, remain fine.
