As on July 31, 2025, as many as 178 bridges in Gujarat under the roads and buildings department were closed for vehicles in the last six months.The information was tabled in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly in response to a question raised by Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar from Danilimda constituency in Ahmedabad.Among the 178 bridges, 82 are major ones and 14 of them were completely closed for all kinds of vehicles and 68 were closed only for heavy vehicles. Of 55 minor bridges, eight were closed for all vehicles and 47 for heavy vehicles. Of 41 culverts CD (cross drainage) structures, four were closed for all types of vehicles and 37 for heavy vehicles.In another response to Congress MLA Imran Khedawala from Jamalpur Khadia in Ahmedabad, the state government said that following the collapse of Gambhira bridge on Mahisagar River on July 9 in which 22 people were killed, a structural stability inspection of 1,054 major bridges, 5,475 minor bridges and 239 culverts CD (cross drainage) structures under the Roads and Buildings Department was conducted till August 1, 2025.Among those, 74 major bridges were found to be in dilapidated condition and nine were closed for all vehicles and 65 for heavy vehicles.Out of 51 minor bridges declared ‘dilapidated’, five were closed for all vehicles and 46 were closed for heavy vehicles. Of 41 culverts CD (cross drainage) structures declared as dilapidated, four were closed for all vehicles and 37 for heavy vehicles across the state.Narmada Canal bridgesThe condition of bridges over the Narmada Canal is no better: 53 out of a total of 2,122 bridges on the canal are in a dilapidated condition, of which 43 are completely closed while 10 were closed only for heavy vehicles, said Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, who has the portfolio of Roads and Buildings.Story continues below this adThe details were tabled in the House in response to a question raised by Congress MLA Anant Patel from Vansda Assembly constituency in Navsari district who had asked how many bridges over Narmada canal are in a dilapidated state as on July 31, 2025.These fall in the districts of Kheda, Gandhinagar, Patan, Surendranagar, Ahmedabad, Botad, Morbi, Mehsana and Banaskantha.Three bridges on the Narmada canal were closed before the Gambhira bridge collapse. While the bridge in Kadi in Mehsana on the Saurashtra branch canal was closed since October 10,2022 and Thasra in Kheda on Narmada main canal was closed for heavy vehicles on April 1,2023 and the third in Patan’s Santalpur taluka was closed on March 10,2025.Further, barring five out of 53, majority of the bridges were closed within 10 days of Gambhira bridge collapse. Chanasma in Patan on the Vallabhipur branch canal was closed on August 5, 2025.Story continues below this adThose closed for heavy vehicles include Thasra on the main Narmada canal in Kheda district which has been closed for only heavy vehicles since April 1, 2023. New super structures are being constructed, which are estimated to be completed by April 2026. While these closed bridges include major ones closed in July, two bridges also include Kadi in Mehsana over Saurashtra branch canal which is completely closed since October 15, 2022.
