A theme park enthusiast caught the moment a roller coaster began to fall apart mid-ride on camera. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: the chances of getting hurt at a theme park are incredibly low. In fact, the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions reports that the odds of a serious injury on a permanent U.S. attraction (not the traveling carnival rides) are just 1 in 15.5 million.Credit: Dreamland MargateHowever, things can – and do – go wrong at theme parks every now and then.A guest at Dreamland Margate caught proof on camera.Credit: Dreamland MargateDreamland Margate Roller Coaster CrumblesGuests were riding a wooden roller coaster at Dreamland Margate’s Scenic Railway in August 2024 when the track quite literally crumbled beneath their vehicle. The incident was documented by YouTuber Coasters ‘n’ Cocktails, whose video shows the roller coaster initially running as normal. The vehicle then hit a small piece of what appeared to be wood on the tracks, sending it thudding against the emergency beams. After hitting the beams, the coaster rocked forward and then backward, revealing that the incident had shredded the wooden slats both beneath and to the side of the vehicle, leaving a few scary-looking gaps.Fortunately, nobody was injured in the incident. However, Scenic Railway was subsequently closed, with the Dreamland Margate website listing it as “not operating.” As of September 2025, its page has been removed from the park’s online ride listings as the attraction remains inoperable, with a note on the park’s website stating, “Plans for the Scenic Railway will be confirmed further into the 2025 season.”Credit: Dreamland MargateAt the time, a park spokesperson released a statement confirming that “on Saturday, August 10, a fault occurred on the Scenic Railway at Dreamland, which damaged pieces of the wooden track. The train automatically stopped, as it is supposed to do.Dreamland’s standard safety procedures were put in place, overseen by the park manager. Passengers were escorted off the ride and prior to continuing their day out, were offered a precautionary check-over by the first aid team on site” (via Kent Online). The incident recalls a similar event at Carowinds in June 2023 when a guest noticed a crack in the Fury 325 roller coaster’s steel pillar. This later forced the ride’s temporary closure. Meanwhile, guests grew concerned at Pennsylvania theme park Kennywood in 2024 when they noticed that its 97-year-old roller coaster, Racer, was seemingly being supported by blocks.History of Scenic RailwayThe roller coaster has a long history, ranking as the oldest rollercoaster in the UK. First opened in 1920, it was built with a combination of local timber and mechanical parts shipped over from the U.S. Since then, it’s survived three big fires in its lifespan, with the most recent in 2008 coming as the result of an arson attack. It reopened again in 2015 after undergoing extensive repairs and receiving brand-new trains after the originals were destroyed in the fire.Credit: Dreamland MargateLast year was a rough one for Dreamland Margate. In July, a drum and bass event titled Worried About Henry took a tragic turn when 22 teenagers were hospitalized following suspected overdoses. Among them was 17-year-old Emily Stokes, who tragically lost her life. While it faced a license review – in which it was revealed that on the night of Worried About Henry, approximately 40 youths accessed the railway track alongside the venue – it was later decided that the park could continue hosting events.Do you think theme parks do enough to ensure guest safety? The post VIDEO: Roller Coaster Falls Apart Mid-Ride appeared first on Inside the Magic.
