Dismissed ASI gets life in jail for nurse’s murder, evidence destruction

(Representational)A local Mohali court Thursday sentenced dismissed Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Rashpal Singh to life imprisonment for the murder of 23-year-old nurse Nasib Kaur and for destroying evidence by dumping her body near a village pond. The court also imposed a fine of ₹50,000 on the convict.Under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC, Rashpal was awarded life imprisonment along with a fine of ₹40,000. Additionally, under Section 201 (destruction of evidence), he was sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹10,000.The case dates back to November 13, 2022, when Nasib’s body was found under suspicious circumstances near a pond in Sohana village. Eleven days later, the police arrested Rashpal Singh from Sector 67, Mohali.During interrogation, Rashpal confessed that he was drinking with Nasib on the night of the crime. When she became unconscious after consuming excessive alcohol, he strangled her to death. He admitted, “She was pressuring me to marry her. In frustration, I killed her, placed her body on my Activa scooter, and dumped it near the pond.” CCTV cameras had also captured him with the body.Police investigations revealed that Rashpal and Nasib were in a live-in relationship. Evidence from Nasib’s mobile phone, CCTV footage, and WhatsApp chats established the accused’s involvement.Police informed the court that Rashpal had earlier been dismissed from service after a robbery case was registered against him. In that incident, he had attacked a man with the butt of his pistol. He had also suffered a bullet injury in a gangster encounter in Panchkula, after which he was promoted from head constable to ASI. Despite this, he later committed another robbery.According to the post-mortem report, Nasib had been strangled and her cervical bones were fractured before her body was abandoned near the pond.Story continues below this adNasib, 23, worked as a staff nurse at a private hospital in Panchkula.
