This weekend, Disney Parks fans on social media got an inside look at the Rivers of America demolition at Magic Kingdom Park. According to several photos from a Walt Disney World Resort guest, crews have begun the process of silt removal in the former waterway surrounding Tom Sawyer Island. The Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat welcomed their final Magic Kingdom Park guests in July 2025. The closures came nearly a year after Walt Disney World Resort announced plans to add two Cars (2006)-themed attractions to Frontierland. Later, Walt Disney Imagineers revealed that the area would be called Piston Peak National Park, inspired by the beauty of America’s national parks. It will include a rally race thrill ride, a family-friendly attraction, and several features from the existing landscape, like barrel bridges and parts of the Rivers of America.Credit: DisneyConstruction began weeks before the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Belle permanently closed. Crews cleared thousands of trees on the border of Magic Kingdom Park, preparing a gravel lot to serve as an equipment staging area and a temporary trailer office complex. This area will serve as a home base for both the Piston Peak National Park project and the development of a Disney Villains land “beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.”Credit: DisneyOnce the Frontierland/Liberty Square attractions shut down, construction walls went up. Disney drained the Rivers of America for over a month, and due to heavy rain, they’ve had to repeat the process several times. Crews have slowly begun removing the old Liberty Square Riverboat tracks and installing scaffolding to support higher construction walls that will block the ongoing work from Magic Kingdom Park guests. On Saturday, September 13, X (formerly known as Twitter) user @bioreconstruct shared several photos of the ongoing work at the Magic Kingdom.
